I am new to this forum. I recently bought a vintage 1983 Squier bullet bass online and am having trouble identifying it because the pickup is different from all others that I have seen and contradicts every source I have researched thus far. Mine does not have a split coil pickup like all of others. I can't seem to figure out how to post a pic? Is it some kind of prototype? Or perhaps it has been modified by a previous owner? Any help regarding this matter will be greatly appreciated!

It is almost certainly NOT a prototype. Without pics, who knows? It could be the current Squier Bullet Series Jazz Bass which says Squier "Bullet" on the headstock but has 2 Jazz Bass shape pickups.

The Bullet started as a USA made Fender branded bass with a first generation P-Bass headstock shape using Mustang Bass pickups and was available in your choice of 30 or 34 inch scales in 1982 and 83 as a replacement for both the Mustang and Musicmaster Bass which were being discontinued. When production moved to Japan for the Squier brand in 1983 and 1984 the headstock went to a larger second generation design. The bullet sort of had a western theme with a star on the headstock decal. The best investment ones are the USA Bullet Deluxe versions with original factory case and a 34 inch neck.

Since they had a short run they are not as numerous as either the Musicmaster or Mustang and would make a good investment as prices are still reasonable on them. They were a very good playing instrument and sounded fine too.

A Bullet Bass series of P's and J's has been made recently or is even still being made by Squier for sale only in emerging markets. They are not for sale new in North America. The are very low budget models with a full sized P-Bass or J-Bass pickup pair. They are below the Affinity series in quality.
