Hey guys. I decided to pick up an off/on hobby again and start playing guitar again. I have played accoustic/electric 90% of my guitar history. Now I want to learn to play rock. I hope to play with recorded songs I like. But, since guitar playing (and singing) has been an off and on hobby I don't want to put a lot of money into the equipment right now. I am retired and have time to play almost as much as I want. Anyway, I got a used Squire Bullet Strat and a Fender Mustang 1 amp. The guitar is in great shape for a used guitar and it sounds good to me. The Mustang is a great little amp that I know I will enjoy as I already have for a few days.

I'm posting this just in case there is anything I need to know or just want to know about my guitar. Other than obvious things I mean. I know virtually nothing about electric guitars. I don't even know what type of pickups are on mine. I don't know what the future holds for me playing guitar. No performing is planned at the moment. But if the opportunity presents itself I'd be willing. Also, I don't have anyone to play with at the moment. My son plays guitar just like I have. Off and on. I hope to jam with him after we both knock the rust off our fingers. I've played accoustic and sang mostly but my son has played mostly rock so I hope to pick up a lot from him. I love rock and always have but for some reason I always enjoyed playing and singing the more mellow stuff I could play by myself. I'm getting off the subject of this forum. I am enjoying the Squire and see no need to upgrad right now.

Does anyone have recommendations of books or CDs that teach rock theory? I know barre cords and a few basics. Any Youtube lessons out there? I knew quite a bit about chord theory but I have forgotten a lot of that. It would probably come back though if I try.

Jack

I have found a few spots, here is a link to someone who has many links to good information and lessons.
http://eatsleepguitar.com/.

I would say that if it sounds good to you , play it. For the place you are things like what pickups your instrument has don't matter. Play it, enjoy it, and practice. When you feel like your out growing the gear save your money and upgrade to something better. I would also suggest you have your guitar set up at a reliable shop, usually about $75 dollars.

I rebooted my guitar hobby with a Squier Bullet Strat (intending to learn Surf, Spy, Spaghetti Western, and other similar genres), and was happy with it for a long time. The first mod I did was to put on heavier strings (.011"s or .012"s) for better tone and added more springs for the trem block.

One of the first things I learned to do with it was pinch harmonics, or "squealies", which the Strat single coil bridge pickup (and high gain) is really good for.

I came across this guy, Justin Sandercoe, on youtube, but go to http://www.justinguitar.com/
Lots of free content on different topics and I like his friendly attitude.

Justin is a good dude and his site is a great place to start, he has lots of content and links.

I'm a believer in heavier strings as well, med bottom heavy top. Sure lites are easier to play, but the tone is weak (sounds like a tin can). I read a post here yesterday, someone was saying his strings were too stiff , he had lites, 9's I think, someone suggested 8's. (I don't think I've even seen 8's ). I didn't get into it because I didn't want to start a huge debate about it. I'm with you on both counts.

Never heard pinches called "squealies" but I like it  I have been trying to teach someone how to do it with no success, I think it's one of those thing you have to find by yourself.
