I just got a used fender squier affinity left handed telecaster. What I can't figure out is why the headstock has a big gold fender logo on it? The only place it says squire is on the neck plate on the back. It say's affinity series on the top of the headstock but that is it. THe serial number starts with CY11, which I'm guessing is a china 2011 made squier. Image

I'm not sure you're serious with this question, but here goes:
Some previous owner took the Squier logo off and replaced it with a Fender logo.
Apparently he(/she/it) was not trying to deceive the person he(/she/it) sold the guitar to, because he(/she/it) left the "Affinity" logo on.

If you need more info on the subject, just type "fake" and "legit" on the forum search.

That was a serious question. I found online that the older models from the 90's have a fender logo on the headstock that is large like that. Most of the pictures I could find on google had black lettering, but they had some with gold as well. I own two fender's, One MIM 96 Strat, and a 94 Jag-Stang that I can't play bc I'm left handed and I was a family members who passed, so I don't play it. Anyways man, I bought this guitar because it came with a hard shell case from GC. As you probably know they sometimes take $@!&#* pictures. It was listed as a fender squier affinity telecaster with a hardshell case. I needed a new case and instead of buying one for 80-100 bucks I figured I would get one with a free guitar. The whole package cost $108 so I didn't expect much of anything. I was more thinking it was a older model squier since they had the fender logo on the headstock. I knew it was a squire. Listed as that, has the affinity logo on the front, and Squier neck plate on the back. I just was wondering more if the china made ones had that kind of headstock on it like the japan ones use to? I search online for the past week and found nothing. Figured I would join this forum to see if I could get a answer from someone or someone's more knowledgeable.

Thanks for your info on the guitar. I don't know why someone would try to put that logo on there. The second you touch it you know it's not a legit fender. Plus as you said they left the affinity logo on the front and the squier neck plate on the back. I hope this never got sold to someone as a fender because that $@!& isn't cool. I'm guessing not because it was in good condition for being a $@!&#* squier. Not saying squier's are all $@!&#* but this one of the lowest end models you can get. Plus I'm guessing by reading the serial number that it's a 2011, and not a older one. If it was that might be different. Heard those older squier affinity guitars are made with better material. Glad I got it because now I actually got a guitar I can mod and do stuff with and not worry about messing it up. Thanks for your response man!

There's never been a FMIC made guitar with both "Fender" and "Affinity" logos on the headstock.

I'll give the person switching the logo the benefit of the doubt that this was not done for fraudulent motives like money. Let's just assume he(/she/it) was a young poor newbie who just thought the F-logo would make him(/her/it) and the guitar look cooler and thus improve his(/her/its) self esteem, and maybe even play better.

$108 isn't bad for a case and a lefty guitar. Plus, the Tele is such a bulletproof simple genious construction that with a proper setup this Affinity will play real nice.
And oh my, what a perfect base for modding that guitar is...

Just tossing my own $.02 worth in here...

To address the comment regarding the "Black Label" Fenders, yes, there was in fact a "Squier Series" that was around in the early 90's. These were NOT "Squiers" in the usual sense...they were in fact low end Fender branded instruments with the words "Squier Series" on the mouse ear of the headstock. I can't speak to Tele's (I don't even know if they did a Squier Series Tele), however I own one of the Strats...they're pretty decent guitars for the average price used, however they typically had VERY low end hardware and some came with the lower end laminate bodies (although some, such as mine, used basswood as well). That said, I also feel they're also WELL worth a few upgrades...I slapped a Fender MIM Standard bridge on mine along with some GHS pickups and some vintage style tuners and I gotta say, that's really an awesome little guitar. I don't really know the whole story behind the black label Fenders, something to do with a fire at the Baja production facility I've read, however they were only produced for a couple of years in the early 90's.

Now that out of the way, that's NOT what the guitar in the pics is...from the pics, it looks like a pretty average CIC Squier where the logo was simply replaced (the lack of an inlay around the truss rod shows it's NOT a Fender neck, simply Squier). It's rather sad really, but there's still a bad stigma attached to the Squier name. Most of it has to do with ignorance and snobbery more than anything...there are folks on these forums who really do believe that a guitar with Squier on the headstock just isn't worth playing (although half of them wouldn't know the difference if you blind folded them). In any case, I gotta agree with jmartis here in that the previous owner probably did this because they thought the Fender logo simply looked "cool" more than anything (and I would actually credit that person for leaving the other info intact). These days, with inkjet tech being as good as it is, it's pretty easy to pickup a water slide decal kit and print your own...I've done it once or twice myself.

Now regarding the quality and the age and such, honestly, these newer CIC's are pretty good little guitars for the money - I have an '09 Affinity Tele that I picked up as something of an art project. I did upgrade the pickups and bridge on mine, but it's really a very playable guitar...for a Tele anyways (I still prefer my Strats!) LOL!!! I also have an '08 CIC Standard Strat and again, for the price that guitar is actually very decent...one of the most beautiful factory finishes I've ever seen on a Strat (Fender, Squier or otherwise). Perhaps it's simply a matter of perspective, however I remember many of the low end import guitars that came out in the 70's and 80's and the truth is these newer Chinese made instruments are MUCH better instruments...my Chinese made Ibanez Artcore is just amazing! Likewise, don't assume that older guitars use "better materials"...9 out of 10 times that's really just a load of rubbish. There are some notable Squier imports...the MIJ's from the mid 80's for example, however the vast majority of the power end Squier imports were fairly comparable as far as materials (give or take the use of laminate bodies). If anything, the newer instruments typically have much tighter quality control than the older instruments often had and for budget instruments, the Affinities typically have much better hardware than the low end instruments of the days of yore. While this is of course rather subjective, I suspect that with a bit of work...a good setup, new pickups and maybe some detail work on the frets, I strongly suspect that you'd be hard pressed to tell that Affinity from it's more upscale, Fender branded cousins.

Anyways, all other things considered, for the $108, you got a pretty decent deal. My advice would be - don't sweat the logo or the when/where it was made and simply enjoy the guitar for what it is!

Again, just my own $.02 worth.

That's just a Squier Affinity which somebody scratched of the original logo and put on a Fender one instead.

being a lefty $108 is a good price for a block of particle board with a broom handle stapled to it. Fender/Squire upcharge for lefty guitars which is a terrible policy and unfair. At the height of his carrier Jimi Hendrix could not afford a lefty guitar thanks to the bums at CBS but the practice was carried over with the next regime, he settled for a left handed flute he used on the album Axis:Bold as Love, which he later repurposed as a bong now in the treasured possession of Rev. Billy Grahm's estranged nephew "Irregular" Petey.
Don't get me started! My G&L was the same price as it's RH counterpart so why this is done is BS.
anyway it looks like a fake trying to be passed off as a real Fender, but if it plays for $108 you got a hell of a thing.
