Hello Frankenstien,

No you cannot put regular acoustic{steel, bronze}strings
on a classical guitar which must have nylon or gut strings.

The regular acoustic and the classical guitar
are assembled differently, and the classical
will not stand the excess pressure of acoustic
guitar strings.

Hope this saved you a few bucks.

Cheers.

I'd like to put a Strat neck on an acoustic and I've been looking at my classical guitar to rip the neck off and replace. But I don't think the pine top would hold the strings.

I've tried the Stratacoutics and other Fender acoustics with Strat necks but I find the fredboard too flat and wide.

I've become accustomed to the Korean skinny neck on my Squier and the only other guitar I see out there that has the same dimensions is the Jackson. Too bad they don't make an acoustic.

So I guess you would have to replace the top for Spruce and reinforce the ribs. Stewmac has a lot of expensive parts for that but I don't know if it is worth the effort.

Another possibility would be to build from the ground up with a Jackson neck. That would be one wicked acoustic!

My classical guitar neck is very worn out and bent so it is not much good like it is. I think on stewmac.com they use a hot knife to unglue parts off acoustics which is what I would have to do to repair it anyway. The neck on a classical guitar is much wider than a strat so there is plenty of room that must be filled and glued with pieces of wood.

Another idea, I just thought of, would be to cut the neck off and leave enough to bolt the strat neck at the bottom after establishing string length etc.

A classical and a steel string guitar are totally different sounds so there is no way to compare. It is just a matter of preference. The sound chambers are built differently so there are obvious benefits to building from the gound up for your purpose.

I think I read once that the top wood by itself is strong enough to hold the string tension which would explain the Stratacoustic with the plastic back.

I'll let you know if I loose my mind and try one of these ideas before they take me to to mental asylum.

Take care,
