Hello,
I bought this MIM Squier Strat at an auction along with a SKB hardcase, Fender 15R, and a ProLine stand. I cleaned the fretboard and body, and it plays really nice and all, but I'm still curious on to what exactly it is. It only has one volume and one tone pot, along with a Floyd Rose 2 Trem/locking nut. I decoded the serial and found it to be '96-'97 model, made in mexico. But every time I try and find it online, they all have single coil pickups (SSS), and this has one humbucker and two single coils (HSS). I just want to know if anyone has any idea as to if this has been modified, has a different neck, or just is completely stock and I'm bad at finding stuff. The serial number is MN6XXXXX if that helps any.

Looks to me a bit of an oddball...
At the moment I think it's modded - not necessarily a fake, since in that case the headstock would say "Fender". Autopsy pics might tell more - neck end, heel, under the pickguard; and close ups of that tremolo and nut - do you find any marks that these were added later?
Also, back of the guitar, with close ups of tuners, headstock etc.
On a 1996/7 you might even find a sticker with a model number in the cavities.

Oh, and it's considered polite to add pics in your posts; it saves the members that extra click and thus increases your chances to get answers. Like this:

Edit: st52 beat me to that advice

Yeah I tried to add them like that, but they didn't show up in the post preview so I figured it's better to have links to pictures than none at all. I'm gone all day today, so when I get home tomorrow I'll be checking it out everywhere.

I have to go with jmartis there...I think a peek under the pickguard and a look at the neck heel and in the neck pocket would be in order. Along with that, I'd like to see a close up shot of both sides of the headstock.

I know that somewhere in the late 80's, there was a Squier Series that was pretty comparable to this (the HM series I think?), but from my understanding, those mainly came out of Japan (although some later models probably migrated to Korea). I didn't really know they had done any Mexican Squiers in mid to late nineties though...doesn't surprise me, just didn't know it. I know that in the early 90's Fender did "Squier Series" Mexican Strats, but those were Fender branded, with Squier Series on the mouse ear of the headstock (and frequently sanded off one most of them these days).

In any case, I'd be looking for signs of alterations or mods...particularly around the bridge and the locking nut area. Look closely to see if there's any signs that these were added later. Not always definitive, granted, but a good starting place. Likewise, a peek at the backside of the pickguard could reveal if those pickups were upgraded or something...sometimes you can tell, sometimes you can't (mostly dependent on the tech who did the work).

You can also try sending the serial number in to Fender...if you haven't already. They've been less than stellar about some of my older Squiers, however I know they've been able to give me good info on my MIM Fender Standards from that era, so if it really is a Mexican, they may have some details for ya.

I look forward to seeing how this one unfolds.......
