pickups are so edgy and have no sustain.

Pickups, if they are in normal working condition, aren't a big factor on sustain - they just carry on what the string vibration produces.
Still: pickups too close to the strings can kill sustain with their magnetic pull. That, and the "edgy" could hint that your pups aren't in the sweet spot.
Of course, it may be just that the sound isn't to your taste - and that is also a question of wiring, pots and caps.

I kinda figured this would be the case anyway.

You seem to go through guitars in such a speed that it makes me doubt if you have time to get familiar with any of them.
My recommendation: full setup, experiments with different pup heights and guitar/pedal/amp settings - plus a few hundred hours of playing

I would gladly pay another $50 for a classic finish on the neck and a step up on the pups...

I'm pretty darn sure Fender won't start offering all kinds of custom options in their economy price class guitars...

Ive been playing for almost 30 years - know a thing or two about pickups. One thing that affects sustain is the natural feedback of the guitar . If the pickups are not properly representing the tonal range and volume of the string vibration , yes, a pickup can affect sustain greatly...actually did a test between my surf strat with Duncans and the new standard. There is a big difference - and the action on both guitars is good so its not string buzz either.

No, i dont go through guitars at " such speed " , ive had the same couple of guitars for a good 15 years before i purchased the white and gold strat. Had it for a couple of months before i traded it for the " surf " strat then bought this new Squier standard. Tested the white guitar on multiple amps , took it to two techs , and it was proven faulty yet fender wouldn't make good. Dont know how long YOU need a guitar to know that it has a problem, but i knew after it was played through my new amp that something was up.

And as far as the amber lacquer and slightly better quality pups - thats hardly a " custom option " request, and being that they are made in indonesia , it would probably only cost them a few extra bucks per guitar.

My squier surf strat has those features , better pups and aged colored lacquer and it only cost $40 more than the Standard. They could do it.

Anyway- im relatively happy. From now on it will only be full blown fender products...although i did play a classic vibe 50's squier and love it but i might as well hold off for the real deal.

The company designs different series, which all have their specs. Anything out of this concept is custom - unless they'd publish a new series. But like you said, you prefer the (already existing) surf series, so...

On the sustain issue, it seems I can offer no help since you already know it all.
