So you are saying that
first you phoned FMIC and they promised to replace the pups,
then the guitar was inspected and the pups were found defective,
then FMIC suddenly said they won't replace the pups..?

Something is missing from the equation here.
Don't know what kind of Customer Legislation you have where you live, but "in my hood" refusing to repair a defect needs some validating reasons.

Now, the FCR of course don't have the same confidentiality rules as a doctor or a lawyer does, but they may have some company policy (which is of course understandable) and they may have some trouble finding this particular case.

Anyways, to me it seems we're not getting the whole story here.

[One thing I'm beginning to wonder is, if the guitar (as it seems to be a one-off) was customized by someone else than Fender.]

Well, i went against my instinct and bought another squier product. Im actually really happy with it. And my guitar center said fender may help me out a little extra for the inconvenience, which is cool but ill have to see that happen. I can register my new guitar but i dont know how much good that will do after this fiasco .

Its bitter sweet because i got a better guitar but there was a lot of time , gas , and headache wasted for something that should have been taken care of. Step it up fender !

And btw the new guitar is a Vintage Modified Surf strat with Duncans in it. Sounds great plays awesome !

At least I am still curious about
- the reasons why the warranty did not cover the defective pickups, and
- who (= which Fender department) made that decision.

Like i said, i have no idea why. They could have simply told me. They did tell the guitar center tech that " there is no way all three pups have microphonic problems " but they did. I should have made a video of it but its water under the bridge now. To be honest im not impressed with fender or GC at this point. Found an easily repairable problem on the current guitar i have now ( its repaired ; ) ) Its obvious someone had been in that guitar as well. Guitar center seems to sell guitars that have been previously played or have problems. Its best just to order direct , still in the box. Its ridiculous the kind of customer service you get nowdays . I will order fender products online but if they have ANY problems they will go straight back for a refund. Not dicking with " warranty repairs " any more.

Well, in my first answer I wrote:

I don't want to cast any doubt your skills, but all three pickups being microphonic in a brand new guitar sounds so rare (even though the pups in Squier Standard price class probably aren't waxed) that let's try to confirm the diagnose

Apparently the diagnose (all three pickups microphonic) wasn't confirmed before you ran out of patience and bailed out of the situation.
Seems that the store and the manufacturer didn't get a fair chance to explore the fault, and so your grudge is IMHO ungrounded or at least premature. And: GC agreed to revoke the deal...

Anyways, if you're satisfied with the guitar you have now, all is well.

On that buying from a store vs ordering online conclusion you made:
It's exactly opposite from what I (and most forum members) recommend; usually the advice is to go and play an instrument you want before you buy it.

I will order online because , being that guitar center is the only fender dealer in my area with low prices, yet many of the guitars hanging on the wall are either used , played or have problems- the only way to go is to order it so its fresh out of a box. If there are any problems- i can send it right back. If you buy it off the showroom floor and they have to swap it out, they usually dont have the exact same model so it has to be ordered anyway.

And i dont know how much time i need to give fender to make a decision , and it was pretty clear after sending it to two Fender authorized techs that fender was REFUSING to honor their warranty.

With that , im still buying fender products ...ordering from a better place ; ) Much of the work i can do myself ...i just didnt want to hassle with it . I set up my bench again and im ready to work. Wont be quiet about future problems though...i will make vids as well.

You can easily pot pickups with wax yourself if you think it save your pickups .

On that buy from store - buy online:
Your reasons are perfectly OK and reasonable, and the online stores advertise the return policy with "try in the comfort of your own home".
Maybe I (and others with the same opinion) just get too many "I'm thinking of byuing guitar A or guitar B, which would be better for me" questions, or maybe I'm just too old (fashioned?). You do as you want, I'll go on with my system.
One major point behind my opinion is that the test guitars in the mom&pop stores are supposed to be set up properly, which is just about impossible if you order online.
A sidenote: due to the growing online market and it's returns, here (EU region) the legislation has changed, return freight isn't free anymore - although most the online stores haven't yet begun to charge for it (the recession and the competition, you know).

On the "how much time i need to give" issue:
It's relative - the legislations usually say "reasonable time". In this case (based on what you wrote) Fender still was in the state of thinking "there is no way all three pups have microphonic problems" when you cancelled.

But the big pic here is:
Quote:
Anyways, if you're satisfied with the guitar you have now, all is well.

Jmattis, I agree with you.

I never bough a guitar if I can't test it .

So , i replaced the defective strat with a squier surf...then had to get another Squier standard with the flame maple top...nice guitar, but again...pups are garbage. They at least work but they are where they cut corners on the guitar. Those alnico pickups are so edgy and have no sustain. The surf strat i bought has vintage output seymour duncan lipstick pups and they rock for low output pups...

I kinda figured this would be the case anyway. Its still cool to look at and play on the clean channel but it will be a project guitar. Going to have someone put a vintage gloss finish on the neck and then replace the pups with fenders or seymour duncans .

I would gladly pay another $50 for a classic finish on the neck and a step up on the pups...they could do it. Otherwise , im happy. Finally .

No more squires though. It will be official fender from now on. Next purchase will be a 50's classic ...
