Greetings,
This is my first contribution to the forums section.
I have been customizing and building guitars for a while now and playing even longer. So I was wondering what everyones take is on a few things I would like to do.

First I would like to swap out the bridge pickup for either a (*Gulp*) USA Gibson Alnico, ( will this work and whadja think?) And Advice on how to go about it ???
The neck seems out of wack, I could either replace he whole thing with a warmoth or something Fender?? , (but were am I going to get a replacement water lift decal for it?) Or I could try and fix the infernal thing. I would like to put some nicer tuners on it too.
I am going to replace the neck pickup with the Tex-Mex in my Nashville Deluxe. I don't use that Strat sound in my Tele..lol

The body is going to be painted a powder blue w/ a bright orange racing stripe , it will match the colors of the older Ford GT 40 race car of the 60's. Advice will definatley be apprectiated. I tried to post this in the Fender forum; and noone would answer me, probably the wrong section...

Hmm....Interesting projects. Some thoughts...

1. I am not a fan of putting those Gibson pups in a Fender. It's not really a question of brand "whatever", it's the fact that Gibson mounts are so long (they barely fit into the Epiphones...and even the neck pup has to be modified with a lot of higher end stuff)....Eh, I think you're better off both sonically, and financially with something else. Fender makes the PAF style nickel-plated pups that will probably fit quite nicely inot that bridge position. Seymour Duncan, and Dimarzio, EMG...so many other options besides Gibson, and at a better price.

You'd have to bastardize the pickguard, and cut the body, and be mindful of your pots. What would be of assistance is to find a schematic of an HSS and go from there. (If you're that insistent on the Gibby pup...well, to each their own...still think that's a lot of unnecesary work.)

2. Necks are a tricky thing. I don't know what your preferences are. Warmouth will deliver a neck to spec, but you might want an official Fender neck on it. That's something you're probably going to just have to reasearch extensively and make your own conclusions. (Although I do know that Squier does have a model out there with jumbo frets...probably at a better price as well.)

As for the painting? Online sources. They sound like great projects though...Best of luck....

The neck may be the tricky part because aren't Cyclones 24" scale like the Jagmasters? Or am I confused with something else. As far as pickups, Gibson pickup polepiece spacing may be a bit different than Fender/Squier, so you need to find out if the string spacing on the PUs will work with the string spacing at the bridge. Gibson and Fender is sort of like Ford and Chevy. Some stuff will be compatible with the other sometimes, but often they are similar enough, but then different ever so slightly to make things a bit difficult and annoying at times.

EVH slanted his bridge pickup to compensate for the string spacing. You could also get a new bridge with a Gibson spacing.

If the trussrod in the neck is broken it might also have cracked the neck. Depending on the setup you probably have to pull the fingerboard off to get to the trussrod and replace. You might consider Stewmac as another source or Mighty Mite.

As far as you paint job you are considering the blue and orange Gulf Oil company colors were also used on the Porsche prototype racers from Le Mans and Sebring. I probably have a picture since I saw a vintage race at FIU a very long time ago as part of the Miami Grand Prix. I don't remember GT40 with those colors. Most were dark blue with a white stripe or white with a dark blue stripe. I'm sure you can find your color scheme on the web.

If I bump into my pic I'll send it to you.

Good luck with your Frankenstein.

I have a professional motorcycle/hotrod painter to handle the paintjob.
He painted my "Psychobilly" 89' American Strat .
If I can figure out how to post pics I will share that beauty.
We are using some vintage cars of 60's racing and ...lol a Hotwheel to match the paint. If we can't match it visually we will use a color eye to match it. I didn't even think to consider the Gulf paint scheme, let alone the Gibby spacing.....(*^*^%&%%$@!!!!

So what about the Tele Nashville Deluxe Strat Pick up , That should be no Big deal , right??

I think you will be safe on the neck pickup which will be more dependant on the nut spacing.

Can't wait to see your paint. Maybe you can post it on your web and link us to it. Especially if you are going to do more projects a web site would definately be in order.

Surf around for more pics of the Gulf Oil cars. You might find some more customizing possibilities from the logos and numbering.

I've gotten a lot of inspiration from this site but unfortunately I don't have the time to build anything right now. Maybe someday I'll build that neck through body guitar or finish my Jackson/Strat.

Have fun with your build.

Thanks Mustangtoo,

I only considered the Gibson 'bucker because I had it laying around.
I put in a bid for an American Highway one humbucker...it should work.
And I will replace the neck single w/ the Nashville Deluxe strat pickup.
The tuners are a concern I would like to replace them w/ something more vintage like.
Allparts is a possibility. 8)
