***DISCLAIMER***
I'm so new that I received my first guitar yesterday.

Equipment used:
Squier Affinity Strat
Samsung CM40 Tuner
Supplied Strings
DR PHR-9 Strings

I received my new and first guitar last night. Today I tried to tune it, I was able to get low E, A, D, G, and B in tune. When I just about had about had high E in tune the string broke. Figuring it was the supplied strings (on and tight on the axe when I received it) I restrung it with the DRs. I ran the strings up through the back, over the saddles, through the slots on the nut, up under the upside down "w" looking things on the headstock for the high E, B, G, and D strings through the tuning pegs. Tried to tune it again, and "ping" same damn thing, same damn string.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

G'day,
At what point is the string breaking ? This should enable you to figure why. Maybe a sharp edge on bridge or tuning peg, or tight nut slot or sharp edge on string tree. Are you getting a couple of wraps around the tuning peg before it tunes up? Are you using an electronic tuner which indicates the string as well as the note ?
Hope this helps, Ross

At what point is the string breaking ? Below the nut, probably about the 2nd or 3rd fret. Maybe a sharp edge on bridge or tuning peg, or tight nut slot or sharp edge on string tree. No sharp edges on the bridge, tuning peg, or a tight nut slot. I assume the string tree is the upside down "w" things on the headstock, no sharp edges there. Are you getting a couple of wraps around the tuning peg before it tunes up? I wrap it around the tuning peg a couple of times before stretching the string, then get anywhere from a 1/4 turn up to 3 turns. Are you using an electronic tuner which indicates the string as well as the note ? I'm using a chromatic/electronic tuner, as far as I can tell it doesn't tell me anything about the string except the pitch.

I found out what I was doing wrong. Please read the disclaimer on the original post before flaming me for being stupid. :oops:
The problem was twofold. First I was tightening the strings to far before tuning, and then tuning up. Then I found out for a standard tune it should be in the key of "C". So thank you for your help, it was greatly appreciated, if for no other reason than I did learn to look for different things. :D

Glad you got it sorted, if you bought new out of a good store they could help you out with problems you run into.

I was told that I should tune in "C". Maybe standard was the wrong word. I know that there are different tunings such as drop d, but I just wanted to use what is most common? Once again I'm just learning.

Niterider, I bought the guitar from zzounds.com, plus I have a coworker/friend who plays bass and drums and played guitar for a short time, so I usually feel more comfortable asking my dumb questions of him.

No problem bro; wasn't trying to give you a hard time. Standard tuning is in the key of E. If you have a tuner it will tune to E by default but you can always use it to tune in other keys. If you are a novice than I wouldn't worry about alternate tunings right now. And btw, there are no stupid questions; we've all been there before.

Strings should be EADGBE from top to bottom. If you leave strings flabby when restringing it's pretty hard to go past the right pitch and over tighten.

That's standard tuning. I don't know why anyone would be suggesting anything else. Alternate tuning are for specific situations and tunes.

That "Samsung CM40 Tuner" is, I believe, in fact a Samson CM40, which brings us to the manual (it's a 14.5 MB pdf file, sorry...).
On that, the "standard" setting is marked "C".
On a standard guitar tuning, the strings are
1st (highE) 329.6Hz;
2nd (B) 246.92Hz;
3rd (G) 196.0Hz;
4th (D) 146.8Hz;
5th (A) 110Hz;
6th (lowE) 82.4Hz

BTW, the C major scale ("C key") is C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C; the A major scale (A key) is A, B, C♯, D, E, F♯, G♯, A... :wink:

Might I suggest, a clip-on tuner that displays the key AND the string...and this will NEVER happen again.
You like to shop at zZounds...they have the one I like best for about $11.00

http://www.zzounds.com/item--FENFT004

p.s.- I have been playing for nearly 30 years...and once in a blue moon I had that happen to me as well. The above tuner will completely eliminate the risk of brain fartage. :wink:

sometimes I tune higher than standard so i use a size 11 acoustic string I had laying around instead of the size 9 and it works perfectly fine
