Looking to buy a first electric and I like the strat sound, style etc. Squire seems to be a good economical way to start. When looking at used Squires the prices are all over an no one states what model they are.

How can you tell the difference between Bullet / Affinity / Vintage and Standard. I know Vintage has 22 frets. Any other tricks?

Vintage (Modified) series has 21 frets, Squier Standards and Deluxes have 22.

On separating different models:
There are so many different Squier models that it's IMHO pointless to start learning the details on every model. Rather, decide which guitars for sale interest you, then find out what those are - the forum usually helps.
Asking the seller is also a good way.

Maybe you get some help from this:
It's common that the sellers that have Affinities or Bullets don't mention the model series. The price range on these is usually on the low side - from 20$ to 150$, even more if the seller is a) optimistic or b) a player. 8)
If one has a Classic Vibe, VintMod or Standard for sale, it usually says so in the ad, and the price range is often higher.

One trick is to look at the tuners, Bullets usually have what are known as trapezoid tuners which tend to not work as well as the ones that are not attached with two screws. They are also the low end of the squier strat line.

Affinity are mid range, there will be a notation on the head, Bullets being the same. Beware of guitars where it looks like someone has sanded off markings.

Used can be dicey if you aren't sure what you looking at, and though Craigslist and Kijiji will usually have the best deals you might be better buying used from a reputable dealer since they will offer some sort of warranty and possibly setup.

I like scouting pawn shops but typically the prices are on the high side and quality is all over the place so unless you know what you are looking at I might avoid them. My rule of thumb is they paid 50% of the selling price so there is room to negotiate.

Family and friends could be a good place to start.

An unfixable issue is a broken truss rod, this cannot usually be fixed easily so look carefully at the neck and on most newer Squiers look at the allen bolt in the head. If it looks rounded out avoid especially if the neck has a noticable upbow or bowed down.

Like most things, buy what really turns your crank so appearance could be important, how it feels as well. Tougher if you are just starting out but if something doesn't look or feel right this could always bug you and mean that you play this guitar a lot less than you would like.

As the others have stated, there are many variations of Squire models. Best to find one you're interested in, then find out the specifics. To help with that, I found this handy PDF: http://www.woolbrightvideo.com/files/fo ... rSpecs.pdf

Thanks pcarrell. Awesome document!

I ended up buying an Affinity Strat for $80 with cable, amp etc. They bought the kit and the kid used it for 2 weeks. Still had the plastic film over the pick guard. So far I'm loving it. Good for a starter anyways.

You're welcome!

An Affinity will work as a starter and hold you for a while.
