Hey guys, i need your help. I was going to buy a mim fender but found a squier sq serial number. It sells for 250$, but the neck looks heavy worn. Should i stick with MIM, or give squier a try?

Patriot1306, can't make anything outta your pic, it shows up so small.

In general, 250 for a real (be careful checking it) SQ series is cheap.
And IMHO marks of time make mojo, so worn neck would be no biggie. In any guitar that old, a fret job would be expected so the fretboard lacquer can be fixed at that if one chooses so.

The quality of SQ's stands well out to a MIM, and doesn't shame beside a MIA, either.

Stratele, maybe it's time you go & play some MIJ's of the eighties, and maybe try a new Classic Vibe while you're at it  - you might be surprised.

Edit1: P1306, check the pickups. SQ should have MIA ones if they are original. If not, see what you get for the money.
Edit2: Here's a pretty unbiased view to Squier's of the eighties: PlanetBotch.

I just what to try some MIJ '80 ,can't find no more on musics stores

Any modern Squier are good guitar for the price . Yes I try Classic Vibe, very good for the price.

More expensive guitar are better.

Yep, that's your view and you can keep it if you wish. Maybe tone down a bit when you badmouth cheaper guitars, please..?

But I beg to differ.
After a certain quality point, a good player can achieve anything he wishes on a guitar. Jack White on a Highway1, Duke Robillard on Squiers, Roy Buchanan (you can substitute almost any name here) on a standard Tele - I won't even begin the list of numerous standard Strat players...
(BTW, SRV sounded just like SRV with a Squier...)
Let's face it: those multithousand-$ "handmade" guitars (by Fender CS or other makers) are not bought because of the instrument's musical properties...

They did ship to Canada in the 80's, ours was purchased new at Cosmo Music in Richmond Hill around 83 and it is as good or better then Fender branded product of that era or any MiM Strats made today.

The secret was that the first batches (JV) were constructed using genuine Fender parts from the US. Not as sure about the SQ strats.

There's no backup to the statement in the underlined part.

On the contrary, the JV's were copies of existing Strats, presented to and approved by Fender US. Their reaction:
Quote:
Dan Smith, Director of Marketing, Electric Guitars at the time :
"Everybody came up to inspect them and the guys almost cried, because the Japanese product was so good - it was what we had been having a hell of a time trying to do."

Some of the MIJ models had US pickups, though.

Ok yes the electronics, I read that same statement in Tony Bacon's book which I own a copy of. I used the generic term parts since the tremolo is not an electronic part but technically it should have excluded the wooden bits perhaps although there was some debate as to whether some necks and bodies could have initially been shipped over to get them started.

Same sort of mystique surrounding the MiK first run of Squiers which some say were using up Japanese parts granted I don't think there is any definitive proof.

Our JV has A US Fender tremolo, wiring and pickups, and we are the original owners so I know these were not swapped in by someone. Only thing I have replaced in all these years are the strings.

The Japanese are experienced woodworkers and hence the high quality work on the bodies and necks.

Another good quote from Tony Bacon's book, Squier Electrics 30 Years of Fender's budget guitar brand.

"Sugimoto says that when Fujigen made Greco copies, in each case they first acquired a real vintage original to work from. "We bought the actual guitars, broke them down, measured the whole thing," he explains. "We discovered exactly how they would make something like that, in order to precisely make the Greco instruments. So when we came to make the Fender Japan guitars we knew what we were doing. We could be critically accurate, with dimensions just right, exactly as our own drawings. The US-made Fenders at that time were not so accurate". Fender knew this too. "At the time'" Smith says, "the US product was of questionable quality, and the Japanese-made product was of unquestionably better quality." (Pg17)

Fender USA made alnico pick-ups, as used on USA reissues (Stratocaster's only!), Japanese electrics, hardware and plastic - Strats have a zinc alloy trem block (Tele's and Basses have Japanese made pick-ups).
(21frets.com)

That's how it was with the MIJ Squier Strat I owned 'round 1990ish. Switched the wiring to CTS/OrangeDrops, kept the pickups stock.
Never had a reason to fiddle with the tremolo so can't say if it was US (would be imperial) or Japanese (would be metric). And, don't remember what year model it was - bought it used, and those days it just wasn't as important as it seems today. :)

Do you happen to have a pic from the wiring in your guitar, CTS pots are easy to spot.

It has Fender Lace Sensor Gold pickups. Are they any good?

Here are bigger photos. It seems to me, that neck aged kinda ugly :?

No useable pix of the underside of the pickguard, I tried stuffing my P&S into the gap once when wife wasn't looking but she won't let me take off the pickguard maybe next string change though she will only let me do one at a time.... I'm betting that popping the neck off will trigger a divorce. (Insert facepalm)

Wife is afraid I am going to wreck her guitar!

I still owe Larry pix as well.
