I was in a hurry last night and bought this on eBay. When I looked closer at it today, the neck looks suspicious to me. Sorry, these are the best pictures I can get of it. The neckplate serial number is SQ52004, (83' - 84') Does this neck look like a newer one to you experts out there?

Thanks very much for any input

I'm not an expert, but the logo seems wrong to me - I thought the "Stratocaster" should have been in 70's style lettering.
(BTW, SQ+five digits with a four-bolt neck would mean 1984, I think.)

As far as "looking new" goes, if a guitar has been mainly sitting in its case, it may be near mint condition after 30 years. And the neck usually looks as worn as the rest of the guitar...

Did a quick check on the Squier Specs pdf /Woolbright (beware, it's over 10 megs...), but found no suitable model.

How much did you pay, how does it play and how does it sound?

Like I said, tired and kind of in a rush, I paid $350 shipping included. Now that I've researched a little further the neck looks like a newer MIJ neck. (but no serial number on the headstock) Neck switched out maybe? It looks like it has bigger frets than the 83' - 84' models. The rest looks original, I don't have it in my hands yet, just won the bidding last night. I guess if it plays good maybe it's still better than the newer Chinese or MIM ones for that matter.

Because the strings cross directly over the dots on the 12th fret leads me to believe it's a 50's style neck.

Serial numbers are a joke on those... They all read '84. Most are much later in the 80's to early 90's.

Got the guitar Saturday. Everything seems to check out on the dates and it plays good, pickups are not the most desirable. The middle and neck aren't bad but the bridge PU is pretty thin. I've never had a MIJ Strat, Squier or otherwise, just wanted to see what all the hype was about.

The decals look different then our JV Strat, they are from a later production run.

The neck looks right otherwise, truss rod adjustment in the heel is the same as ours. Would be interested in the radius of the neck ours being 7.25 which would be right for a 57.

Your tuners are different, trapazoid like the Bullet and mini tuners which can be so so, ours has Kluson's.

Oddly I just picked up a used E9 Korean Squier II yesterday and your neck looks a lot more like it except for the truss rod adjustment.

In terms of the 'hype' mainly it was because the first couple of runs of JV's had the Fender brand name and not Squier. By the third batch they had switched to Squier. Parts were the same with most of the electronics coming from the US. For example our bridge has Fender stamped on all six adjusters. The other aspect was that the woodworking was better due to the skills of the craftspeople fashioning the bodies and necks.

Price sounds about right, looked like some finish cracking on the body. I would say it is legit.

Planet botch http://planetbotch.blogspot.ca/2011/12/truth-about-1980s-squier-strats.html has a good article titled The truth about 80's Squiers and Tony Bacon has a pretty good book out about Squier history.
