Howdy all...

Well, I just grabbed myself a MIM Squier Strat. I'll get some picks up soon but wanted to ask a few questions about it. It seems remarkably well made (for a Squier). The neck has both flame and some birdseye and has aged to a magnificent shade of amber. Even the rosewood seems to be of very high quality. The saddles are the blocky ones, not bent steel. The body is regular thickness and looks to be a yellowed white, I'm guessing Alpine but perhaps Oly. I've yet to look under the hood at the electronics but overall it seems like a very nice little guitar. The knobs and pickup covers also seems to be nicer plastic than I might have guessed. They were asking $165 and I asked if they'd take $20 off and so I got it for $145. Perhaps not a steal but it seems on par with the newer MIM standards so I'm thinking it's a decent deal. The serial number is MN8893**

Any ideas what I just got, specifically the year and model? I checked the serial number and it looks to be made in 1998 but not sure how accurate that is. I'll post some gut shots once I open her up. Thanks...

Cheap electronics, ceramic pickups, pot metal block, and no shielding... time to hit the shop and get this thing spruced up!

The last photo to share until she's back together...

This sure looks like a 1993, not 1998 in the neck pocket but that's kinda out of whack with the rest of it... suppose it could be a 98 though unless the body has some other history :?:

I just got one layer of shielding paint on, will apply others as they dry. I swapped out the POS bridge for another POS bridge  it was a new MIM standard bridge that I had installed a GFS brass block on, before replacing the whole thing with a Callaham on another project. The mounting holes all lined up but the string spacing was a little narrower on the newly installed bridge which I like... also found some CTS pots and a CRL 5-way kicking around the shop. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to trash the pups or replace them. I'm also going to weigh my options as far as a new neck is concerned though the look of the Squier is pretty tasty. I may try my luck selling it though I can't imaging the going rate for Squier necks is very good.

I wasn't really planning on a new build... I just got down with my Jerry strat!

I just applied a few filters to the picture of the neck pocket date and it looks like it could be a 1999 which would make sense...

That's a really nice flamed neck. How's the body contouring?

The contouring is a little deeper than my MIM body that's a few years old... so it's pretty comfy to play. I just ordered a new neck; a used 2000 70's RI CBS headstock with rosewood board. I'm going to convert it to a 4 bolt and sell this Squier neck. It looks great but I prefer bigger necks and the Squier is a little small at the nut for my tastes. I'll get a picture up once I get it switched over.

HOLY *%&*!

The place where I just picked up this guitar last week went up in flames last night! Glad I was able to save it but too bad all the other cool stuff in the shop is gone... it was a super cool shop :(
