So my first electric guitar happened to be an 83'-84' MIJ SQ. Literally have had it for 11 years and didn't know what I had till yesterday when I pulled it out of the case and did some research. Now I've always liked the guitar itself especially the neck, but found the pickups lacking. Now since I just found out that this particular guitar may be considered a collectible by some and I realize they might advise against taking any original parts off of it, but the guitar has sentimental value to me and I'd like to upgrade it so that I'd be more inclined to put more hours on it. Which brings me to my question... Seeing as it would be wise to retain the original parts as best as possible I was considering leaving the pickups with the original pick guard and replacing it with a new loaded pick guard. Only problem is, upon researching this particular model the screw positions on the original guard might be different than what's available now, specifically the top screw between the middle and neck pickups. Does anyone know anything about this? I know could probably just get a pick guard and drill a hole in right spot on it and kinda rig it up but I don't really want to do that. I've looked on eBay and Amazon and can't find anything that would match up. Anyone have any ideas?

If your ear is accustomed to modern style, higher output stadium shaking pickups, those old ones may seem weak.
Or they just aren't at the right height.

So, there is this perfect solution but you don't want to use it..?

Then, just change the electronics - choose pickups etc that fit in the existing pickguard & have the job done by a good pro in a way that can be fully reversed back to original.
Or order a loaded pickguard that's custom made for that particular guitar.

"Collectors" is a subjective term... I say it is sort after for its quality of build. Pickup swap really won't make a difference. If your a guitar player, not a collector make it work for you. Keep the original if you're worried about it.
