All squires are made in China. The Classic Vibes are rated as the best.

Thanks mate, you've been really helpful. :D
I was wondering if it was possible to use a versatile amp to play heavy rock and / or metal with this guitar.

Also the S/N is confusing :?

You can play rock and metal on almost any solid body guitar. Try the Mustang amp. There are other modellers too, Roland Cube, Vox VT, Peavey Vypyr...

Are you certain? I've been reading about this guitar for a bit now and they say it's mostly suited for classic rock, blues, and rock; because it's a classic vibe '50s it's not suited for metal. :| Some say by changing pickups and other parts it'll play better.
So many different reactions is confusing.

Sometimes asking forums is the worst thing to do. Too many people talk opinions in absolutes.

Here's a list.
Status Quo, Teles
John 5 - Tele
the first two Led Zep albums were done on a Telecaster, not a Les Paul.
Dave Murray from Iron Maiden has only ever played a Strat.
Smashing Pumpkins - Strat. Listen to their first album and tell me it's not a thrashing, screeching chugfest…

Yeah, hum buckers might thicken up easier, but all these guys have high end gear and racks of pedals. When you've a modelling amp, it's not worth arguing over IMO.

As I said before, a modelling amp will offer a huge range of sounds and levels of distortion and loads of fx pedals,. That is already more than you'll need. The guitar should feel good to play. That's all that matters at this stage.

I knew you were gonna mention that
Sure they weren't on classic vibe 50s strat, but they were strats nonetheless.

I guess you're right, I'll be spending a lot of time on the basics anyway, by the time I get to playing metal songs I'd have enough saved for some mods.

The CVs are just 50s styled, it doesn't mean it'll only play Buddy Holly…

Seriously, plug a Cv into a Mustang and put on the Metal 2000 preset. I think the type of pickups make little difference when you've got something like that on the other end.

By all means see if you can find any Epiphone LPs, see how they feel. There are the LP 100s or Specials which are real cheap, look and feel it IMO. But then you're in Bullet territory with those.

Yeah I had a look. Even with the discounts, they were expensive.
I stuck with Strats for a reason - versatile and amazing, plus good for people like me.

I got quite lucky with this deal I think.

For amps, since I'm gonna be out of budget:

Vox Amplug Twin and Vox Amplug Metal
Also maybe this instead http://www.allansbillyhyde.com.au/prod/ ... ifier.aspx ?

Just a good one to stick my headphones in, really

I wouldn't bother, a modelling amp is better value, and has a headphone input.

The point of getting a half decent guitar is for it to sound and feel good. Then you want to play it through an amplug? I'd go get a bullet and modelling amp instead, if the budget is that fixed.

I'm less knowledgeable about amps than I am about guitars  It's a good thing I'm here, then, because I'm getting to learn a lot. Although, I sometimes feel a bit embarrassed due to my ignorance. :) Baby steps.

I realise you are on a budget, and you're not getting any other opinions apart from mine, it seems. But I wouldn't skimp on an amp. A Mustang or similar is not big $$, but they sound good and are very versatile.

Fair enough. I mean, I learned that other than a brand new bullet, it's better to spend a bit more money to get a second hand guitar that's higher up the food chain (i.e. better model).
So, after finding out a used Squier Standard Strat, it turned out that the poster did not send me the S/N when I requested it.
Instead, I went to a guitar shop to find out a 3-4 year old Squier Classic Vibe 50's Strat, that's already been set up, and is in a good condition, for 395 bucks. It's an alright price for an expensive place like Sydney. So, considering Classic vibe > standard > bullet/affinity, I plan on buying the classic vibe.

I'll buy a modelling amp, too (p.s is it the same as a combo amp?) :|

I like the way things have been going since my last reply here. That Classic Vibe is way above the Bullet/Affinity levels, so if the price suits you, go for it.

A combo amp just means that the amplifier and speaker cabinet are combined, not an amp head and cabinet separately.
A modeling amp has built-in tone presets you can use to get specific sounds - some have presets for famous amp sounds, some for different music styles, on most you can save your own presets. A modeling amp can be a combo or head+cab.

Mustang V2 is just the update for V1 - either one would, IMHO, be OK for a first amp.

My opinion on how to share the budget (amp/guitar) differs from what drubbing said - I'd rather play a good guitar with headphones than struggle with a guitar that doesn't stay in tune, won't intonate, is a pain to play...
