Chinese import, right?

They're well liked. Several steps above an affinity.

This would probably be fine. Also under $500, Standard Tele, made in Mexico, at Musicians Friend $499. You can usually find free shipping and no sales tax online. Others: Sweetwater, American Musical, Guitar Center, Music 123. Make sure to check them out locally to see how they feel. Have fun. :D

I bought an Affinity Butterscotch Tele that is very nice. Now $179. Pickups could stand to be changed out, or not. :D

Thank you for the replies.
I researched and read that the "Vintage" model has better pick-ups in it, compared to the regular Butterscotch Blonde model for the same price.

I would advise you to thoroughly research what interests you at your price, and not to rush to buy. Shopping is a lot of fun. You can listen on utube to most anything. And to get one in your hands for plenty of testing before buying. Best of luck. :D

I would not hesitate to buy the Tele you listed if I thought it was right for me.

Well, as it goes money is short. So I'll keep playing The Affinity Strat awhile longer. ( at least, try to play!)
So I decided on replacing the pick-guard assembly.
(maybe a new guitar later)
The 2 tone knobs never did anything.
And the volume knob had 2 adjustments, high or low.
The pick-up switch, I had to fumble with to get sound.

I looked around and found this drop-in.
http://www.guitarfetish.com/ALNICO-Pick ... _p_83.html

All the screw holes were all off a bit only by about 1/8 inch or so.
Very close to a perfect fit.
The top fit of the pick-guard to the bottom of the fret board was a tight good fit.
The bottom fit well also.
Just those darn little holes.
Instead of white knobs, I'll keep my black knobs to put on it.

Sounds ok, and everything works better.
I bought a set of Xaviere strings, with the pickgaurd from GF also.
I'm not sure if its the new pick-ups, or the strings, but the guitar sounds a bit different than before. Still good though.

I was wondering how critical it is to have the exact pick-up adjustment height?
I don't understand the Bass side & Treble side.??

see ya,

Bass side = distance from the low-E string bottom to the top of the pickup pole,
treble side = distance from the high-E string bottom to the top of the pickup pole, the string pressed at the last fret when measuring.

Those measures on your table are good starting points, the final touch should go by ear (I usually set the neck pup lower but it all depends on the pup set).
The pre-loaded pickguard you bought isn't overly hot, so start with the (vintage=) 2.4mm/2mm setting.

On that guitar choise, when you return to that: I think you just might be ready for a Fender
Mex made are quite often below that 500$ limit, and with a little searching some US made pre-owned may be just the thing you want. And: play it before you buy it.

Thank you for that very thorough info-
That sure helps me out a lot.

The cable jack always comes loose too, so I spun the nut off, applied some fingernail polish to the threads and tightened the nut back up. Haven't had it come loose again yet.

peace,

D.

oh, I am guessing MIM stands for made in Mexico?
Are those identical in size as the American made Fenders?
I know my Squier is a bit undersize than a full size Strat, but that keeps it light a little also.

Yea, MIM is for Mexican, MIA for US models, MIJ and CIJ for Japan - those are the most common.
Body, neck sizes are usually the same if they are Fender branded, pickguards & hardware may not fit. It's the same with every Fender, always make sure if you're going to mod something. That pickguard holes not matching you encountered is almost a standard...

If you want to keep things small and light, don't be limited to trying just Teles and Strats.
Jaguars, Jagmasters, Mustangs, Duo Sonics etc. have a shorter scale, which by nature translates to lighter string tension and thus to easier playing.

All the holes in my Affinity had to be drilled out. Cut lenths of toothpicks were put in the oversize holes near the old drilled holes then the screws replaced into the new holes. This way if anyone wanted to replace the pickguard with the original part, then all they had to do was tip the guitar upside down and pry or let the toothpick pieces drop out. Then either putting the toothpicks back into the other holes, or using filler, then redrilling holes.
Sotra like having a "Guitar picked toothpicked pickguard" :D

Also the neck radius size, as I have short fingers.

Thank you for the list of other models. I will look at them, and also the specs.
