If you're looking for your first amp, the Fender Frontman 15R is a great entry level amp that you'll be able to use as a practice amp later on of you decide to upgrade. Don't expect to sound like a rock god, but the clean channel is pretty decent and it also has a distortion built into it. The nicest thing about these is the reverb. Even in these cheap little amps, Fender manages a decent Reverb. Make sure you get the 15R and not just the 15. The R is for Reverb and it will be worth the extra few dollars to have it onboard.

To answer your question, you really could plug any guitar into any amp. Some amps are made for guitar, some for acoustic guitar, some for bass, and even some for keyboard, but if you plug any guitar into any amp it will work. It will just work better if you use the correct amp for the correct job.

The fender G-Dec Jr is a little bit more than the frontman amp but it is cool and definitely worth the few extra bucks. You can simulate a number of different amps, effects etc. It also has a series of drum/bass tracks to play along with. Great for a beginner.
