I have that pack (or an older version, maybe, but it has the SP-10)...

I got mine for $120, because the store was closing and everything was 40% off.

It's not a bad guitar, and I still use the amp on occasion for the built-in overdrive.

Similar 10-watt amps cost around $60, so you're looking at a $140 guitar.

I would probably spend a little extra money, and buy the Fender Frontman 10G (which is mostly the same, but slightly better than the SP-10), and a different Strat... for $150, you can get an Affinity, or for $200 you can get a Standard.

Unless they've improved the pack-ins, you'll be replacing the strap and cable very soon. The picks are fine, but they cost about $2. I still use the Squier tuner exclusively, and the one in the pack now looks better.

If you buy a beginner pack you will get everything you need to get started right away. I recommend spending more initially which can help prevent you from nickle and diming yourself to death. If you want a starter pack go after the middle or upper end in price range.... I think the HSS and GDEC sarter pack is 350 but I don't know for sure (also try to get a deal or try to get it on sale). If you spend more you'll recieve more which might help you out when you learn. But you don't have to get a starter pack you can build your own. If you do that it might be your best option if you stick with it and don't abandon it. If you spend 200 or 250 on a standard or deluxe Squier strat you will have a guitar that exceeds your ability for some time. Whatever you do don't forget all the little things. You may want to make a list of what you think you need. For instance....1) tuner, 2)picks, 3)cable, 4)stand(?), 5)polish/cleaner, 6)a good starter book I recommend Hal Leonards complete guitar method and Fenders Getting started on Electric Guitar DVD, 7)strap, and I never use my gig bag so whatever about that. In my opinion if I would have spent up to 500 on my own starter pack I would've done better than the 200 I spent at the store.
Instantly I wanted a better tuner because I didn't know what I was doing and the only thing I have been 100 percent happy with (never thought about changing) was my stand..... and I'll probably never be able to get and exact replacement for it when I accidentally step on it or whatever. It's not that I'm not content with the Affinity (I love it) it's just that I already want a deluxe and already diversified into a Telecaster Custom. If you got it spend it. That is what it's for.

Hello Irishmike203,

Welcome to guitar playing and this forum.

Establish what you can spend.

I'd pass on the $199 SE Special
and step up to the $249 Affinity strat special.

If there's more cash in pocket get a guitar,
amp and acessories seperately.

Best of luck Irishmike.

Cheers.

I have that pack for $200 and I think it's great but it is my first guitar. I bought this package in particular so I wouldn't have to buy anything else and I wouldn't have spent a whole lot of money if I decide guitar isn't for me. But so far I'm really loving it. The only other thing I've bought is the full DVD tutorial of the DVD that comes with the pack. I know there are better guitars and maybe I'll step up to one of those next year but I'm really eyeing a bass guitar now. I'd recommend the pack I have because I like it and it suits my needs but do what's best for you and buy what's going to hold your interest. Shop around and play with some at shops if that's an option for you. Good luck.

It might be a good idea to go to
your local guitar shop and see if
they will cut you a deal on a
package that will get you started...

All they can say is no...

I think they'll work with you building your own package. Guitar Center started helping me to build my own package but I chose the Squier pack instead since it came with everything including a guitar stand.

Hello Irishmike203

Yes you can use any guitar amp, or any cable
you desire with any guitar, interchangable all.

Good idea heading over to you local store
to see what he can do for you at the least
you'll get more exposure.

Cheers.

+1 on the local store. They may not always have the best prices at times (compared to online dealers), but its good to drop in there, check stuff out, talk to the people who work there, see what advice they can offer, and to see what kind of deals you can get locally. I'll stop into some of the shops in my area every now and then just to see what they have and to chit chat with the workers. I figure that way if I ever need them, they hopefully will remember me from previous visits and not try to rip me off or anything...

I did a lot of research before I finally bought my rig. I was looking at the all-in-one kits, but people seemed pretty unhappy with the amp. So I went with a Squier Standard Stratocaster in candy apple red ($199 through worldmusicsupply.com) and a Roland MicroCube amp ($125 through samash.com). I've been very happy with my choices!
