Okay, I played a $1000 natural ash american telecaster, lordy I love that guitar. Wasn't the best amp(solid-state marshall, ick).
Anyway, I'm not rolling in the bills right now, in fact, I don't want to spend more than $400 tops.

I'm thinking I might get http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=515115
Because I ADORE the finish, and I'm probably going to upgrade the switch, pickups to noiseless American set, nut, and possibly bridge as well as buy a hardcase for it.

BUT

I was wondering how much the build quality differs from the fender MIM tele?
Which I wouldn't be able to change ANYTHING about soon.

Natural ash, which I might finish a bit more to a more blonde/gold color like the American one I played.

WHat should I do?

You have to go for that MIM based on the wood alone.

Not only is the Ash on that totally gorgeous and tonally very cool (the MIMs are basically Alder), but the standard MIMs use the same hardware as the regular MIAs anyway.

Plus, the stuff is all cut with CNC machines nowadays anyway.

You got plans to go 3-saddle bridge?

Also remember that the regular Alder MIMs are going for up to $429 now, so at $449 for that Ash, that's a deal and a half.

Yeah, I was going to go for a 3 brass saddle, brass on steel tele bridge for a vintage feel, I'm going to go for a top-mounted vibrato(bigsby or similar) when I get the chance(aka money). I'll be using this for a combo of southern rock, surf rock, and occasional blues leads.
Good pick?

So this is your first Tele? Man--are you in for a wild ride.

Get your rear over to ww.trpri.com...hit Forums near the upper left...then click the basic "Telecaster Discussion" forum.

100% Tele ALL the time!

You have no IDEA what the Tele world is like, and what some of these guys are into and what custom jobs they built with stock bodies and necks. Guys with DOZENS of them who can tell you the radius, scale length, etc. of every Tele ever MADE.

A Tele is only the most versatile guitar ever designed--period. And for the styles you mentioned above, I don't see how you could consider anything else.

The only thing as far as going Bigsby is whether your playing style makes that feature worth it. I don't know anything about it, but I know that unlike Strats (or I THINK unlike Strats), that trems on a Tele pose some tuning problems. Again, don't know for sure.

Anyway, I'll look for you at tdpri--you won't be sorry! (I'm Ira there, not Ira7.)

Best course of action with a Telecaster jones...proceed slowly and with caution. I caught the Telecaster jones last winter, and bought my first Telecaster....

Now I have a Tele for everyday of the week:

My 2 faves are probably the 2nd & 3rd from the left, both Squier Standard Fat Telecasters. I just like the way they feel, and I really like the sound of both pickups on, and thats a pickup configuration you'll usually just see on Telecasters. Though I must note that I haven't had enough time with the 2 on the far right yet because I just converted one into an Esquire and then I got the Douglas Tele last week...
