Why would the g string go sharp when fretted but stay in tune when its strummed open? I noticed this from lets say the third fret up. Im working on a Squier that is giving me this issue and was wondering if maybe I just have to adjust the bridge saddle to resolve this issue. I've got the intonation and neck relief spot on, I know the tuners aren't the best either. Would replacing the tuners and bridge help?

Thanks in advance.

When the g string is open it has a near perfect run from the nut to the bridge. When you fret the g string your finger is pushing down of course on the string behind a relatively high fret and if pushing too hard (or even just pushing) the string stretches slightly making it sharp.

That is one possibility, and normal. You can compensate some by relaxing your fingers some to not push so hard on the string which causes it to stretch over the fret. Just push enough to catch the fret to make a clear note.

I often will split the difference by tuning the g very slightly flat, so that when you fret the g string it will sound in tune if it stretches some.

Also you might need new strings or different strings. A package of ghs strings, or other favorite strings you have heard of may solve the problem.

So I finally got around to figuring out what was happening. The nut has to be opened up for all the strings. The last owner fitted it with 10's and some of the strings are sitting on top of the slot rather than in the slot. A little work with the right files and she should be good to go.

Thanks.
