I searched the data base to see if this question had already been asked, but couldn't find anything on it.

I just purchased a new Sqyier Vintage Modified Jaguar and have done a complete setup on it except for adjusting the pickup heights. When I turn the screws at either end on the pickup the screw either loosens completely or gets fully tight yet the pickup doesn't move. What's the secret to raising and lowering the pickups.

I actually went into the store to buy an actual Fender Jaguar, but I liked how the Squier sounded and played a lot better so I bought it instead and saved a bundle of money... always a good thing.

GretschBear,

Jaguar & Jazzmaster guitar pickups are not mounted on any kind of springs. Each pickup sits on a piece of foam. If you tighten the pickup screws, the pickups should go down. If you loosen the screws the pickups may not rise because the foam is compressed. You can use a small putty knife to help raise the pickups. May have to do it a couple of times until the foam de-compresses.

Thanks very much, Jerry. Perhaps I can switch to a more resiliant foam like memory foam of which I happen to have a small block.

After some thought, let me clarify my response. I don't own a Jaguar but I do have two Jazzmasters. The pickups on Jazzmasters are definitely mounted on the foam blocks. I am not positive about the Jaguar.

At any rate:
Fender sells the pickup height foam strip (9/16 x 1/2 Neoprene) for $5.99. (expensive)

You can buy a roll of the same stuff (weather stripping) at Home Depot, Lowe's or Ace Hardware.

Since your guitar is new, I would think the foam will decompress if you loosen the screws and raise the pickups a time or two.
