I've seen the starter packs at Wally World, Target, etc. Usually the boxes are closed so you can't really look them over but a few times they(or someone else!) openned the top one and I've checked them out but not plugged in. Maybe it is inconsistantcy but the few I looked over were BAD - felt like toys instead of instruments. Poor finishing on the neck, free strings that might be OK for making fishing leaders but not fit for a guitar, a cord of questionable quality(had some nice fat ones that looked good but weren't and some skinny cheap looking ones that turned out great), then you consider the cheap pups and bridge...And then the amp??? I agree with the previous poster - next year's yardsale material. But then if Target will let you open a few boxes and look for one with a decent neck you might get lucky. I'd still stop by the music store on the way home to get some good strings and a better cord - and put an amp on layaway.

I started my son off with banjo at about 5. The skinny neck and soft action suited his hands. Got him his first Strat on his 9th Birthday. An Affinity model. When I upgrade the pickups on mine again the old ones will go in his and hopefully he will have something close to a MIM. He might have to wait till HS graduation to get something from the good ole USA, but the Affinity model will last him till then and is worth tweaking along the way. The main thing I look at is the neck. I can screw in a new bridge or solder in new pickups, but every time I think about doing anything to the neck my mind goes back to the time I tried adjusting a Holly doublepumper "just to see if I could make it run better". Ended up having to take it to a mechanic who charged me a fortune to get it running right again.

A used $100 guitar from the pawn shop is going to be better than a new $100 guitar from K-Mart - and the pawn shop will let you plug it in before you buy it so you can try out a few. I let my son share my amp so saved a few bucks there though.
