Picked up a 'Crafted in Korea' Stratocaster on Craigslist for $60.00 last weekend. Took it apart today to see what was what and it appears that I have a mid-'97 model finished in a nice looking dark cherry red color. Seems like a decent guitar overall, but the tremolo is garbage. In fact, it doesn't have a lot of range of motion (might need to open up the trem cavity some more). The guitar's electronics feature steel pole pickups energized by a ceramic bar at the bottom and mini 500K pots. The pots will be replaced soon and I'll be looking at some replacement pups from Guitar Fetish (or Dragon Fire) as the stock units seem a bit microphonic. The tuners seem decent enough, so they'll stay put. The body seems to be solid (not plywood) but I' not sure how many pieces it consists of. Anyone have any experience with these mid 90's Korean Squiers?

New pot ( 250 K good choice ) need new knobs if you buy american made pots. Check if pickups will fit in same hole and screw in the pickgard . This low budget guitar could use funny parts size

So; I played her again today at church and this time I had no issues with the pickups feeding back (must have the other guy I was playing with last week). The pickups actually don't sound bad, but I'll change out the pots to see how that effects anything. One thing that I particularly like is that I get more bottom end out of these ceramics vs the alnico's in my American Standard. I have a friend who is planning on replacing his MIM Strat trem with a 2-point American Standard unit. Once that's done, he'll give me his old bridge (which has the newer high-mass block) and we'll see how it goes. I must say that although I'm not crazy about the neck, the fretwork is really good.

500k pots gives more high frequency . 250 K pots cut high frequency .

That's why humbucker pickups like on Gibson, use 500k pots , they need all their high frequency . Standard Fender pickups have lots of high frequency , they need to cut some with 250 K pots.

Update: A friend of mine had recently (actually, it's been almost a year) swapped out the stock ceramic pickups from his MIM Standard Strat with a set of Lace Sensors. Just this week, I had asked him if by chance he still had the old pickups and he did. In fact, he gave me the fully loaded pickguard for free! Looking forward to swapping the new assembly in; although the Squier also has ceramics, the MIM's pickups look like they are built to a higher standard, not to mention the excellent pots (full-sized 250k) and selector switch!
