I have a affinity strat in Aztec Gold that is one of the most resonate guitars that I have ever heard. However plugged in it does not sound so great the Pups are poor and the tone controls have little effect. I was thinking about buying a loaded American Special pick guard from The Stratosphere and installing it in my squier. Will this work? Will I have to drill etc...?

How about replacing the neck with an American special neck?

Sure it will sound better with better pickups . But I won't put any money on Squier Affinity . When a guitar need so many and expensive mods, think to invest in a better guitar .

Maybe changing the strings... I have daddario .9-46 since 2 weeks and it's exactly if I have a better guitar. No more aggressive treble after the 12th fret and a warmer sound even for the bridge pickup. Not as good of a Classic Vibe but not far.

This right here....in fact, you can get something nicer within the Squier range that would require no upgrades at all. If you wanted some slightly hotter pickups, a set of Tex-Mex would be a reasonable investment.....but not on an Affinity.

Replacing the volume and tone pots along with a switch can wake up an affinity.
The sound is only as good as the weakest link, so before you replace pickups try a few inexpensive upgrades and see where that takes you
The necks you show in the pics are different - 21 frets and 22 frets
With some stainless bridge saddles and a properly cut bone nut will turn it into a giggable surprise.
I replaced the bridge in my HSS, but left the stock neck and mid p/u
after these mods it really sounds great for gigs and wont break the bank
I have lots of these !
Most of which will be in the classified sections soon
