The neck on my 60's classic vibe Strat seems to be slightly convex creating too much fret buzz. Can the truss rod adjustment correct this. I understand that it will only correct a neck that it too concave. How do I solve this problem? Would heavier guage strings help?

Yes. Loosen the truss rod (1/4 turn at a time & probably you need to do it more than once), tune to pitch again and see if that helps - the truss rod may just be too tight for your string set.
(Dunno what gauge strings & what tuning you have on now - or has the guitar been properly set up. So guessing & trying to give the quick fix options. 8) )

Like I said above, it all depends on how tight the rod is now.
Heavier gauge strings = more string tension = the neck bends more to concave direction,
so that might be the next thing to try.

Thanks for the help. I backed off on the truss rod as much as possible, just to the point of almost no tension, but it did not solve the problem. I'm using 9-42 strings that came with the guitar. I'll try changing to 10-46 set and see if thet helps. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Before the string change, loosen the truss rod even more - to the point where you are sure there is absolutely no tension (the truss rod nut should almost come off), then let the neck set for a day.

But, it's a new guitar, if I understand you right..? How about letting the shop you bought it from do their job and set up the guitar - from your posts I'm still guessing that no proper setup has been done.
