Hi all. Just a few questions i'd like to throw out there, i've been playing guitar on and off now for around 7 years. Mainly throughout High school a few years back, but have recently got back into it and caught the bug big time with wanting to play. I currently only own an Acoustic and quite honestly i'm getting sick of the same sound. I love the sound of a Strat, love the sounds of Clapton, Hendrix, Frusciante, SRV the list goes on. But like a lot of us i'm stuck on a budget.

I've come across a few Squier strats that are of a reasonable price. I just wanted to know the difference (if any) in the sound or even quality of where they're manufactured?

Any tips or advice for someone getting involved would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

There's a fantastic vid on youtube which goes through the differences throughout the ranges from Squire instruments to Fender guitars and up to the Custom Shop.

See it here...

Give it a look... 8)

Thanks for the reply! Was definitely an interesting watch.

But mostly my question was the difference in Squier guitars, as far as where they were manufactured and whether that played a difference in the sound/quality. Don't have the budget for a Fender branded guitar just yet.

I noticed they mentioned in that vid about the earlier model Squiers being sort after. Might just keep an eye out for them.

Thanks again! :)

ive had many Squires and there all pretty similar. if you use your tremolo alot get the 2 point floyd rose style bridges. country origin isnt a big deal imo, there all factory made guitars. id look for a cheap one you like and upgrade some. a new bone nut and maybe hardened steel saddles with a good setup and you will love it. btw i believe your only suppose to use 9-42 strings on squires. Fender claims heavy strings will damage your guitar. never seen it, just fyi. good luck!

Thanks for that Brad. I was mostly concerned about build quality, i fully understand that they won't be as great as a real Fender.

Thanks again :D

Meh even real fenders sometimes lack the quality i think they should have, unless you blow your load on a American. with the squires tho i wouldnt get the 200 dollar ones, thats just crazy. i put maybe a 100 into my $75 squire and its a mean lil thing now. just as good to me if not better than my MIM strat.

Yeah, i've come across a tidy looking black squier and sg 10 amp on Trademe (new zealands ebay) for $180 NZD. Can always sell off the amp.

My first 'Fender' guitar was a Squire CV50s telecaster and definitely worth the money, a very good quality intro to Fender products. If you do go for one, it may need setting up or could be good straight from the box. My advice is to go and try one out, I think you said you prefer a Strat, in a store, then you're seeing the instrument you are buying, if that makes sense, instead of a 'blind buy' online.

I think build quality is largely subjective, as many things to do with guitars are. There are many people, particularly on guitar forums, that obsess over minute details, that will often have nothing to do with how a guitar sounds. Some expect craftsmanship in an assembly line guitar.

But you need to start from the basic premise that a guitar made to a certain spec in China is going to be far cheaper to produce than a similarly specced guitar made in USA. It would be interesting to find out what a Squier would cost to produce there, as well as US specced US guitar in China.

Yes, squiers use cheaper hardware too and I'm not suggesting they are going to all sound and feel as good as a higher end product, but I've not seen any that have any glaringly obvious build flaws. YT demos from good players show they can sound just as good as something that costs more.

I play Squiers and IMO, they are well built instruments which are also fun for modding as well. The quality of their product has vastly improved over the last ten years or so. I'm not ashamed to be seen with one. Squier rocks.

In all honesty, and I'm not saying this to come across as smug, but I don't think I agree that Squiers have vastly improved over the last 10 years. They've had their moments of crap models here and there. But some of the E-Series models (from the eighties) were crafted very well. Those Japanese Squiers still go up in value probably more than any others. Old Protone and MIM Squiers. My 2000 Squier Stagemaster neck through and Indonesian made Strat are very good guitars.

I really think Squier has kept an even keel with their stuff from the 80's on. They've had their hits and misses, but overall, pretty steady.

I'm going to look at one today to purchase. Anything I should look out for? Really just gonna plug in and make sure it works. But what should I focus on looking for?

I've brought one! I'll get photos up when i can, got it in the shop at the moment getting set up, didn't trust myself with fixing it.. It was a mess cos it had been sitting there for a while. Trem/Bridge right up in the air (guessing string tension lifted it) But it was exactly what i was after.

Can't wait to get it back and jam.
