Went to a dinner show on Corona, Ca. last night to see 2 bands. The main attraction was a Led Zep band. ZUSA. Great band. The lead in band was a Deep Purple band. The guitarist opend with a very sweet looking white Strat. An American model made/built only about 6 miles away from the stage. Not sure which as I was not close enough to see the headstock that clearly. But... about half way through the set he switched to a nice looking black Squier Start. The Squier not only held up through the rest of the set but it actually sounded so much better than the Domestic StartCan't say if there were any mods done to it but it just shows tht the less pricey guitar are real gems!!!

I know this is a guitar forum. But I have two Musicmaster basses, one Fender and one Squier. They are my main two basses that go to every gig and get played. I actually had to upgrade parts on the original '78 Fender to get it up to the quality of the Squier. The name alone doesn't always signify which is better.

I got the Squier off Craigslist for $100 with case, have much more invested in the Fender one.

I have always felt that the name on the headstock does not always indicate the quality of the instrument. I have a custom built left handed Telecaster that a friend at Fendr had made for me. It is one sweet player but, I picked up a lefty 1999 Squier Strat Standard from China with a Fender hard shell case for $30. It plays almost as well as the Tele. Almost! So it did not surprise me to hear that Squier last night playing as well if not better, than the high dollar Strat.

Good to hear that someone also feels that way. There is so much "snobbery" that goes on with what name is on the headstock. Not only Fender but with Epi/Gibson too. We had lead player at one time that sold his Gibson LP and bought an Epi one that he'd found because he thought it played and sounded better. To each his own.

On my Musicmasters the Squier reissue had some nice upgrades to the original. Of course the originals were castoffs built with Mustang parts that didn't cut the quality standards too. The Squier has the big 4 pole pickup, the string through body, is about 3 lbs heavier, and the nice cosmetic touch of the painted to match headstock. Now other then the weight and the headstock my Fender MM has those things. Nice because I can use both at a gig and not have spend so much time re-eq'ing the mix from one to the other.

I had a mid 90's Squier I still wish I had today... But as for the label on the headstock, my Chinese Epiphone Dot Deluxe LE is better than most Gibson made ES-335's out there...

There's an old saying, "It's the dancer, not the shoes."

There's another one that goes, "You get what you pay for."

I say if you think it is a good guitar and you are happy with it, then who is a better judge than you? I sold all of my Squiers over time, but would still buy one again without hesitation if I found a good deal

Were my Squiers good guitars? Yes they were, but there are little differences between them and a regular Fender. Small nuances that make a difference. Larger size wires, cast instead of stamped parts, tuners, jacks etc.

I have a friend who swears that Epiphone is as good as Gibson. So one day he stopped over and I let him play my Epiphone Les Paul 1957 VOS Gold Top, (With Gibson pickups in it) and then he played my Gibson Les Paul Standard. Needless to say he changed his opinion.

The realty is that if you are just playing with your friends or in your house then you probably don't need a thousand dollar guitar.

I have a Martin DX1KAE series and my brother in law has a Martin D-18. Mine cost $600.00, his cost $1,100.00. He can't play more than 4 chords and cant keep in time. I play mine all the time and can play boxes and songs. He tries to tell me his is better, which it is, but mine gets played.

I think it really all comes down to you, (which is what was just said!). I suggest playing everything you can lay your hands on, one guitar is going to stand out and that's the one you should attempt to buy. Who gives a rat's $@! what the brand name or model is, your the dancer looking for the best pair of dancing shoes! :D

Good points all, it's one instance where it really is "all about me."

It is NOT the instrument. It's the player.

I don't play much Spanish electric guitar but I can tell you that a Squier bass is a good enough instrument for 95% or better of the people that buy a full blown Fender bass. Squier basses have rarely ever been better than they are right now and likely the guitars follow suite. The higher end Squier basses are seriously good instruments especially when considering the price and comparing them to Fenders most basic offerings.

Squier is kicking butt among the budget lines in basses. The other budget line offerings are mere toys compared to even an Affinity Squier while the pricier Squiers are very serious quality instruments. In 30 years today's Squier basses will still be around and getting played. I have absolutely no confidence in saying that about any of the other budget lines. Just buy the best guitar you can afford and play it to within an inch of its life.

And with the glut of used gear out there you can find stuff for cheap. I just bought a Samick Greg Bennet Design bass with hard case for $80. New strings and pro setup and it plays like a dream! I also picked up a solid state Marshall bass amp for $25. It's not the smallest version but pretty close, excellent practice amp!
Point is, whatever you buy has to feel good to you and nobody else. Yes, it really is all about you! :D

I have seen a few Squiers being gigged around my town at The Cosmic Cafe open mic nights as well as an awesome performance with one by a local band at the County Fair. I saw some top dollar ones also being used that sounded amazing, but I too noticed it was not the instrument but the player that makes it.

I've been playing for 40 years and I feel that it doesn't matter what it says on the headstock but what comes from the player which makes any guitar sound good.
