Hi,
My wife got me a used Squier Strat for $55 off of Craigslist and even though I have a 95 US-made as well as a MIM strat, the Made in China Squier is my favorite axe. I had to set it up though but it plays beautifully.
My question is whether on a strat that has cavities for the pickups and the knobs one can fill those cavities and not use a pickguard. I find strats beautiful without pickguards.
Can anyone help with that? Does it require major woodwork?
Thank you.

My best bet would be taking it to a guitar luthier to get their opinion on what to use

will depend on the type of rout i guess. a swimming pool rout would require filling in totally, then having the routs recut i think to the size of the pickups being used. even then i think you would want to use small pickup rings that cover the gap between wood and pickup cover.

the control cavities would be more difficult to sort. guitars that dont have any scratchplates are generally routed from behind like a les paul, so that all the plastic covers are on the back.

you would also have to re-finish the guitar to cover up all the plugged in bits of wood.

having been a wood worker i would fill the cavities with bondo, then you can rework them to how ever you want...Its the finish of the guitar that I would worry about, its hard to duplicate the finish fender uses....
