I was playing and testing a new amp the other day, and was going to return it because I didn't think there was enough breakup, until yesterday I began to notice my CV Tele's neck pickup had really dropped off in punch and volume.

It's even worse today than it was yesterday, to the point where rolling down the tone all the way removes most of the volume. When switching to the middle position, the sound is almost identical to the bridge position.

Has this happened to anyone? I've had the guitar about seven months, so this is relatively new (for me). I've tested different cords and amps and have gotten the same results.

Sounds like a dead pup to me, if you have had the guitar since new and only had it 7 months i would imagine that it will be covered under warranty

Premature pickup failure is a known issue on my Squier forums, but it appears to be a random event. Some have never experienced an issue, while others have reported premature failures early on.

As was mentioned, if it's still under warranty, have Fender deal with it; otherwise, replace it with the branded component from whence it came:

Vintage Blonde > Tonerider Hot Classics
Butterscotch Blonde > Tonerider Vintage Plus

I have the same guitar and the neck pickup is noticeably weaker than the bridge pickup. I'm not sure I every noticed a change though. How can you tell if the pickup is actually dead or not working properly?

If you have the Butterscotch Blonde model, then the neck pickup should have a bit more volume than the bridge pickup (see numbers below).

First thing to do is check the pickup height. For vintage style pickups, I use 5/64" on the treble side and 6/64" on the bass side, for both pickups.

If you still have the issue, then check the resistance on the pickups. It's easy to check if you have a multi-meter. Plug a short guitar cable or patch cord into your guitar jack, turn the volume and tone knobs all the way up, and move your pickup selector switch to the neck position. Place your multi-meter on 20K ohms and touch one lead to the tip of the open cable and one lead to the sleeve of the open cable, then move your pickup selector switch to the bridge position and repeat these steps. If you have the CV '50s Butterscotch Blonde model, then the numbers should look like this:

DC Resistance: 6.8k (neck), 6.3k (bridge)

If your numbers are vastly different, then your pickup(s) is the culprit. Take it to an authorized service center and have it repaired under warranty.

The neck read 6.6k and 5.9k for the bridge. I have a pretty cheap multi-meter but the neck was definitely hotter.

While I had a spare cable hanging around I tried a different one and noticed that my "high-end" cable (not Monster) was cutting some bass response. That might be the culprit.

My CV Tele 50s BB Has The same Thing Going on with The Neck pickup volume Less than the Bridge Pickup..I think its to do with the Height Of the neck pickup Being To Low.But if you go to lift it up by turning the screws.they dont seem to lift the pickup up to where you want it to be.Mite need to get longer Screws and tubeing or springs...Great Guitars Play mine all the time!...
