I am a total newbie here, just got my Squier Bullet last week. The #1, E string has a nasty TWANG sound. I have tried messing around with it but to no avail. It doesn't appear to be hitting the frets, it's sitting where it 'should' be.

I bought a spare set of strings, but don't see how to get inside the bridge area to attach/detach the string, if I need to replace it. Getting back to the shop is 140 miles round trip, so I'd like to do this myself if possible.

Any suggestions? (With not too much jargon, please, I'm a novice - thanks! )

There should be a plastic cover with 6 screws in it on the back of the guitar. Take that cover off, unwind the strings from the tuners, with a pair of wire cutters cut off the twisted up end, then just feed the rest of the string down through the bridge. The string will come out the back of the guitar.

Thanks! I changed out the string, re-tuned, and it still sounds like a Sitar! What should I do next?

Are you tuning to standard tuning or are you tuning to high?

Standard, using an electronic tuner.

OP:

At this point, if you've changed the strings, you're confident that the height between the top of the 12th fret and the bottom of the high E string is at manufacturer reccommendations, the nut appears to be in good shape and you're still getting a buzz despite the correct tuning to a high E at 440Hz utilizing a proper gauge string?

You may have to take it to the shop. The neck may have to be sanded or adjusted....sorry, man...

Thanks, Sentry, that's what I did... Back to The Guitar Center where they gladly exchanged the guitar. The fellow we dealt with said there was something wrong with the nut. Another guy said it was a high fret. Whatever the cause, it was easy for them to pull out another and swap with me. The new one is great and I'm glad I didn't mess around with the defective one any more than I did.
