I just started practicing a little over 3 weeks ago.
I had a guitar as a teen but never pursued it more, as other interests grew.
I am now at the beginning.
I play every other day usually, cause of my fingers sore.
A couple hours at a session.
I have been using this site.
http://www.how-to-play-electric-guitar.net/
I am learning playing Basic Guitar Cords on the page menu.
It is a bit slow learning, but It's hard for me as i get older.
I actully put a little short music together.
A very bad m/c accident and a burned out memory from operations got me thinkin slowly now. I am also disabeled.
My first day on the web w/ lessons, I was all messed up.
But, the second day i was better. My fingers needed to loosen up and get stronger for sure as they didnt bend well.
Wether listening to my music or trying to play it has been great therapy for me. I can't get into any other physical activities anymore.
Someone suggested this site also but I haven't checked it out yet.
http://justinguitar.com/

It takes patience. I don't get too serious about it if I cant learn well or play good at times. The next day always surprises me.
I am already recording some music I kinda put together. besides missing a few strings once and awhile, I like what i'm hearing. At least to myself anyways.
If I can only play one complete song, I hope it is my favorite one.

so it goes...

good luck, wish you well.

D.

The most important lessons you'll ever learn about guitar are at guitarprinciples.com. She focuses in-depth about how to practice without developing bad habits. Buy her Learn How To Practice book first. She'll explain what to do from there. She'll teach you how to avoid crippling habits or bad habits that'll slow you down.

The best bang for the buck for quickly learning songs and styles is guitartricks.com. They have excellent beginner lessons, amazing intermediate and advanced routines.

Both sites have free lessons to get you started, but you'll be missing a lot of stuff if you don't buy at least that one guitarprinciples book and work the paid subscription ($14.95 per month) lessons and popular song routines at guitartricks.

All the rest are either too slow, too fast, too scattered, ineffective, way too expensive, or boring.

Good luck!

There are many many online courses, some are better than others, looking for a course/tutor is just like buying a guitar you have to find the one that suits you best.

Learn at your own pace some say an hour a day is sufficient, but i would say this is a minimum.

Good luck.

My practice time varies. I try to play at least an hour or two every night. Some days, depending on time available, it could be 1 to 12 hours. Please be aware that sometiems it's nice to not play for a day or two. You'll find as you're learning that a break was exactly what you needed and you'll come back to it playing better than you left it. We all need rest.

As far as web resources to learn by......

www.justinguitar.com is probably one of the best when you are just beginning. The majority is completely free (tips appreciated apparently). He also sells more in depth dvd's. When I first started playing 6 years ago, finding this website was by far the best thing that happened to me. He has a great beginners section. You'll learn chords and basic scales stuff, not to mention tons of other beginner stuff. After you have grown as a player, you'll do good to explore other sites, buy dvd's, etc. Another great site to get familiar with will be tab sites. The best thing for a beginner is to learn songs by playing chords of songs you know and love. www.ultimateguitar.com is a great site.

Hope this helps!

Another vote for justinguitar.com

2-3 hours is largely wasted if you don't have a plan or any lesson structure to follow, you're just noodling. While we all make time for that too, it's a very slow way to progress if that's all you're doing, and you often feel like you're just repeating things you're good at or like playing.

Most YT clips are just going to show you song riffs and chords. That's fine if you just want to memorise songs, but if you want to learn guitar, you need to follow a structured course.

Justin's is and he is an excellent teacher IMO. It's all free and complete - from total beginners to intermediate. It runs on donation and sales of the lesson DVDs and books, for those who want the course available offline. Nothing is held back.

You don't have to buy anything to follow the complete course, but I like to support the guy because he is getting me to learn this thing, and his music theory, strumming and beginners songbooks are excellent.

Good luck! Just remember that you won't become a guitar hero within the next few months. It's going to take time and tons of practice.

I agree with previous posts on the notion that if you're not playing with a specific set of goals in mind for the session, you're not getting the most out of your time. William Kanengiser of the LA Guitar Quintet has been quoted as saying that, due to a variety of factors, he can not practice as much as he used to, but is getting more out of it now because he plans his sessions better.

This is something that a good guitar teacher can really help you with... setting achievable goals based on your strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Easier to go places if you know your destination and how to get there.

Barring that, in addition to justinguitar.com, I also like jamplay.com. They run about $20 a month if you pay month by month. They have lessons in many different styles, for all levels of players, and the teachers routinely hold live web sessions so you can talk to them and get feedback. Not all of the lesson sets are equal, some good, some bad, but there are plenty to choose from.

Ok...these are just my own personal opinions and this is one of those topics where I am usually the odd man out in a big way.

One of the things to remember is that not everyone learns and not everyone practices the same way. Something that it took me a few years to figure out when I was first learning is that personally, I just can't sit there and "run scales" and such. While it is true that all music consists of scales and chords and such, scales and chords, in and of themselves are -NOT- music. I've known a few people in my time that know scales and theory and such out the ying-yang but when it comes time to sit down and -play-, they just suck! 9/10's of most music simply isn't about how well you know such and such scales, it's about how and where you place the notes that you DO know. This is just a very personal and highly subjective opinion but someone such as Carlos Santana can "say more" with one well placed note than someone like Yngwie Malmsteen can with 1000. Seriously...I've been playing for over 30 years now and I quite literally know -2- scales...I know a minor pentatonic and a major pentatonic...that's it. I play classic rock, blues and now I'm in a Southern Rock band...2 scales...that's it.

With that, when I'm practicing...for however long I'm practicing on a given day...I'm not sitting there working scales, I'm sitting there playing along with tunes! In some case I may be trying to work out specific riffs, in other cases I may be paying closer attention to my technique, but in ALL cases, I'm basically jamming along with either the stuff the band is working on or just some tunes that I like. Practicing stuff like scales will NEVER give you a feel for the music...and in my mind, that's what's really important.

Also remember that again, we all learn at different paces! Even practicing 2 or 3 hours a day, this stuff just don't happen over night. I've gone off about this in a few places now but the sad truth is that a lot of people seem to think that playing guitar is somehow related to this ethereal something called "talent"...it's not. I have a brother who thinks he just doesn't have any talent...he's picked up a guitar (and a Uke) once or twice and...well...just couldn't make music on the darned thing! Now think about this...if you needed heart surgery, do really you want a doctor who's just "talented" or do you want someone who's gone to school and has been practicing for MANY YEARS and who -KNOWS- his trade? Are you going to get into an airplane with a pilot who's just talented? Don't you want that person to have hundreds of hours of flight training so that he/she -KNOWS- how to fly that plane? Just like anything else, playing guitar is a SKILL and it takes a very long time to LEARN that skill in order to do it well.

As far as myself personally and how often I play? As often as I can and as little as I can get away with! LOL! If the band is doing a fairly significant show or something, sometimes I'll even keep a crappy guitar in the back of the minivan and that way if I'm visiting my Dad in the hospital and decide to run out to have a smoke, I can sit there and jam for 15 or 20 minutes and work on my chops a little. I've even been known to do this before the show while I'm waiting for the rest of the band to get there...sit there and work out some riffs along with the mp3 player or CD's or even the radio. I -try- to play for at least an hour or so a day...some days I'm more successful than others. Today for example was a real rough one...not only was Dad in really bad shape today, I started the day with a pretty nasty hangover. I think I only had my fingers on a fretboard for about 10 minutes total today (and that was over a guitar trade). That said, you'll notice that I didn't use the word "practice" there at all...I try to PLAY for an hour or so every day.

So seriously...if you've been working the YT video tuts for 2 hours a day for a few months, it's time to just crank up some tunes and just go at it. We learn by doing :-)

Anyways, again just my own opinions...please use them only for what you feel they're worth.

Jim

hehehe...I think we all do that. I've had a couple tunes lately that I just seem to blow every time on stage. I'll work on them and work on them and then when I get on stage, something in the back of my head is going "ok...don't screw up...DON'T SCREW UP..." and yea...I psych myself out and end up blowing it! LOL!!! One thing as a "weekend warrior" that I've learned is that you (or myself at least) WILL make mistakes. In all my years of playing, no matter how well rehearsed I am, I have yet to play "a perfect/flawless gig". In this band I'm in now, I just take comfort from the fact that the other guys blow it too...I'll hear the bass player blow an easy change or watch our front guy pull his amp over by accident (he did that twice at our last gig) and just smile to myself thinking "good...at least it's not just me tonight!" LOL!!!

It's real easy to get down on yourself about your own playing...it really is, and the moment you start doing that, yea...you'll start to tense up in nothing flat. The main thing to remember is to simply sit back and have fun because that's really what it's all about :-)

Peace,
Jim

yeah i have found that i get down on myself sometimes but i use it in a positive way at least i try to. It motivates me to work harder on what i am working on. Always try and stay focused and don't give up as the old saying goes if at first you don`t succeed try try again. and it always helps knowing that i am not the only one who struggles again thank`s for all the positive reinforcement. I know that I can do this it will just take some time and with all the help i have been getting here and there Iam getting better :D
