Hello all I'm new here and would like some advice please. I'm thinking of selling my Squier Stratocaster 57 model which i bought in Feb 1984. It is a Jv 5 seriel number which is made in June 83 according to some date lists i found. It is all original and has natural wear and tear. So, what sort of price could i get for this? Thanks.

The guitar seems to be original and stock - excepting the pickguard.

A JV57 from that period should normally have a single-ply 8-hole pickguard as pictured below:

Damn, you're right. I forgot that. I changed it around 1999 as the original one was cut out to fit a humbucker, then i put it back to its original state and used any old pick guard. I'll try and get the proper one for it, if i can.

In original condition - unmodified in any respect (not routed out for a humbucker etc), they can fetch in excess of £1,000, though £600-800 is more common. Modded, even if you think it improves the guitar, it won't be anywhere near as much. I noticed mention of a humbucker and non original scratchplate? In your shoes, I'd stick it on eBay with a reserve of £400, own up (don't lie about it, you could be sued for fraud in the worst case scenario) and cross your fingers. It's still an excellent guitar, but having had a mod, it's not as desirable to the peeps who spend big money.
My father has the same guitar in fiesta red, which he hacked up to fit a Kahler trem.... the second time he's screwed up, the first was buying a Burns and AC30 instead of a Strat in 1962! He's restored it, but the evidence is there if you look closely.

Moral of the story. If you are hoping to maintain any value or think you're on to a future classic, DON'T change anything other than the strings. EVERYTHING counts, even if the mod actually makes the guitar better, it still kills the value.

Thanks.

Yeah i messed it up, i had a humbucker fitted around 85 so it is routed. That's why the bridge pick up cover is so white as i only put it all back to its (near) original state a few yrs back. The daft things we do when we are young. I bought it from Sho Bud Guitars on Denmark St London in Feb 84, it cost me 225.00, took me months to save for it. I'll probably hang on to it as i can't retire on its sale.

Sh*t happens, mate.
As it happens, I bought my first EBow from Rhodes Music around the same time. I'm from 'up North' and it was the first time I'd ever been to London - Rhodes was the only place in the UK that sold EBows back then. Got home at about 10pm that day and American Werewolf in London was on telly... surreal (for me) that only hours earlier we'd been walking around some of the streets that it was filmed on.
Like I say, they are great guitars, so if Strats are your thing, keep it, because you're going to struggle to find anything better for less than two grand. I just bought an 83 Tokai that is just spectacular.

Rhodes music (if i remember right) was on 3 or 4 floors? We spent many hrs around Denmark St and Charing Cross Rd which had some good shops to the left and right of it. I've been living in Australia for the last 7 yrs so it's probably changed a bit. I do miss London sometimes.

The early to mid 80s were a great time for the electric guitar with all the great Japanese copies coming out. I remember trying loads of Gibson les Pauls around 85/86 and eventually bought a Fernandes Randy Rhoads Les Paul as it was half the price of a Gibson and twice as good.
