I'm buying a Standard Squier this week and I'm going to change out the controlls, pickups,etc... Anyway I was thinking of putting in the Texas Special pickups and was wanting to know if anyone has heard how they sound? Thanks! :)

Sometimes the Squier forum is a bit slower than the others as far as responses. You may want to try asking this in the Pickups & Accesories Forum....

I don't know what Squier pickups sound like, but compared to the stock pickups in my dads MIM standard they have a more "ballsy" kind of sound to them. More lows and mids, and they are great for blues.

I replaced the stock pickups on my 80's MIJ Squire. The neck and mid now have Texas Specials and the bridge a DiMarzio Vintage Blues humbucker. I spend most of my time in the middle and neck switch positions. I have noticed that the TS pickups are somewhat brighter than the stock ones were, more trebely, (is that a word?). The TS PU's also had a higher output. I compensated by lowering them quite a bit. The sound is definately there for blues and old rock, which is what I mostly play. I usually play through a phlanger and Tube Screamer for a decent fat sound.

You'll definately need to play around with the pickup height and your effects for a while to get your own tone. These pickups are fairly hot and sport those alnico 5 magnets. I suggest you begin with the pickups as low to the deck as possible. Those high power magnets are going to mess with your sustain if you have them too high.

I did that very swap. I took a Squier Standard Strat and put in the Texas PU's.

Before the change I thought the Squier sounded thin, without very much depth to the tone.

After the change, tons of depth, and it really accentuated the darker tone of the agathis, giving it a real grit and punch. Overall a Jimmie Vaughn type growl with lots of beef. Yes they are hotter, so they can be away from the strings a bit, overall they sound amazing.
