Hello all

I am thinking of buying the Squier Vintage Modified Stratocaster in white but have some concerns about the basswood used in the body. I've read that its a soft wood and doesn't take any knocks. My other option is the Classic Vibe Strat, but I prefer rosewood necks. Is basswood really that soft?

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

I wouldn't worry too much basswood is becoming evermore popular, and all the major players in the market seem to be using it on certain models, as far as the CV strat goes you are looking at the 50's, the 60's has a rosewood fingerboard and alder body.

Regarding the Vintage Modified Strat, is it a good purchase? Its priced lower than the rest of the series. How does basswood compare to alder?

Sound wise, unless you have a trained ear you probably won't tell the difference, feel wise its possible its a bit softer but agin unless you work with them all the time you aren't going to notice it. There will probably be a difference in weight, but i'm not 100% on that.

Lots of people are cocerned about woods in their guitars and yes we would all like the best, but to be honest i really there isn't that much difference between them. I have a alder bodied strat and a basswood bodied guitar and i actually couln'd tell you which one feels softer. For what its worth my opinion is "if it looks, sounds, and plays good, then it's good", don't get bogged down too much by it.
