The new Squire Affinities I looked at on Sweetwater.com had String thru the body Bridges. So maybe you can order one from Fender.

I mean no offense with any of this but there's a couple of issues I feel compelled to address.

Why waste the money? Who sees the back of the guitar?

-I- do. My attitude is simply this...why do a hack job on something if a fairly inexpensive tool (or even a homemade one) can improve that job significantly? Personally most of my mod's are seldom ever "perfect" but even on the back of the guitar, I want them to be as good as possible. If I make a mistake...even if no one else ever see's it, -I- know it's there.

When you are done, what do you do with the "expensive attachment"?

Well the first thing I would suggest is keeping it! If you've already done one such mod, you may feel the desire to do another somewhere down the line. I can't speak for others but personally "mods" are a sickness in my book...and once you're hooked, there's just no going back! As such I -always- hang on to any specialized tools I have...something like a drill jig doesn't really take up much room in the old tool chest. H_ll...if you do a good enough job on your own, perhaps it's even a service you can offer to others...maybe make the money back that you payed for the jig! And after 10 or 20 years you find that indeed you never did use that tool again, there's always Craigslist and Ebay! Nothin' wrong with re-selling it again later!

My method worked just fine.

Dude...you got LUCKY. The simple truth of the matter is that while yes, a proper drill press will make things easier, without a jig, even on a drill press that bit is going to have a tendency to "walk". Before I drilled out my Affinity Tele for a string thru, I did several test pieces on a couple of different drill presses...on a 2" thick piece of wood, that bit walked EVERY TIME. The front holes were prefectly lined up, but the back holes were a bit uneven on EVERY SINGLE TEST PIECE I DRILLED. And I'm sorry...again I mean no offense here, but doing it with a hand drill is just insane...I could never recommend that ANYONE try that, even on the cheapest piece of firewood...err...guitar body out there.

Now that said, making a decent homemade jig isn't THAT difficult. Yea, if you're going to do a small production run or something you may want to get a decent piece of machined aluminum or steel, but for a one time deal...I actually used a piece of old maple flooring scrap. Did a decent job to say the least (sorry...no pics) and didn't cost me a dime. Took me something like an extra 20 minutes to make the jig...not a big hoo-ha at all.

As far as where to purchase a new bridge, I got mine (along with the ferrules) from Guitar Fetish...it was like $24 or something. Very reasonably priced and very good quality. Not only does it make the strings easier to change, I think it was a big improvement in tone and sustain as well...well worth the time, expense and effort.

Seriously...I certainly encourage people to do their own mods. In my opinion that's half the fun of guitars and you can learn soooooooo much about the instruments by doing it yourself. That said, just taking a hand drill to your guitar...I honestly can't view that as anything other than really bad advice, particularly in this case where doing it right isn't really that terribly difficult at all.

Just my own personal opinions,
Jim

I couldn't agree more, Especially when the difference between a Good Job and a Hack Job is usually just a little more time and patience and maybe a few bucks. My dad taught me to take Pride in everything I do, and If I'm not proud of it I'm going to fix it or start over.

Personally, I don't care what people think about the looks of the back of my guitar. All I care is that it works and does the job, which it certainly does.
