Hello

I'm getting a slight buzzing sound from my Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster and I cant see any serious fret wear. I'm guessing the neck has slipped a bit and needs adjusting. Whats the best way to check? The buzzing occurs mainly when playing chords, particularly around the 9th fret.

Thanks

I suggest you do a proper setup:

Thanks for the link, I took it to Chandlers in Kew and they adjusted the action and tweaked the neck. The guitar is still buzzing though, particularly around the 10th, 12th fret on the bass strings. The neck is maple, so I'm wondering if I should swap it for a rosewood one? Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

maple or rosewood should make no difference whatsoever, and as far as fretbuzz goes, does it show up through an amp? i know its annoynig acousticly but if it doesnt come through to the amp i wouldnt worry too much. But it does sound as if the people that did the work didn't do it properly if its still buzzing, try raising the saddle a little at a time til it stops, it probably wont need much raising

If the buzz occurs on the 10th/12th fret area, a slight adjustment on the truss rod should help. Loosen the truss rod 1/8 of a turn, another 1/8 a couple of hours later if needed.

(And it's a good idea to measure the relief before you do this, so you know what you start with. Instructions on that setup guide bs636 linked.)

Thanks for the advice, yes the buzzing occurs through the amp as well. Do I need a specialist truss rod key or can I use an allen key to make the adjustment? The tech in Chandlers said a little bit of buzzing was normal? It doesn't sound normal to me!

Like it says on the setup guide, an allen wrench is what you need for truss rod adjustments - 5mm is the proper one, 3/16" is a little too small but does the job in case you don't have the metrics set. (What happened to the tools that came with the guitar..?)

IMHO a proper guitar with a proper setup & fingered properly doesn't buzz. If a "tech" can't get rid of buzzing, claim your money back and take the guitar elsewhere.

The tech said maple necks move around a lot more than rosewood ones. Is that true? I must admit, I find rosewood much more comfortable to play. How much do you think it would be to swap necks? I would want to keep the vintage tuners and string tree from the existing neck.

I will try adjusting the neck with my allen key set.
