It was mentioned by someone on another forum that the warranty info that came with his guitar said changing strings on a Squier guitar to anything other than .09 - .42's would void the warranty. I have never heard of that. That can't be true, is it?

I know it is true for the Squier Rockman Controller guitar (those are a different animal), but am nearly certain that doesn't apply to other normal Squier guitars.

In my 50 plus years of playing I have never heard of anything like that.

This make no sense. Put strings you want . This can't affect waranty for sure.

I always have used heavier strings than that. I have 11's on my VM Jazzmaster. I'm just trying to dis-spell what I feel is incorrect information.

Besides, why would Fender sell anything other than 9 gauge strings if that was true.

Well, there is a little "gotcha" that exists in virtually ALL warrantys. Fender says in their electric instrument warranty that

"Any damage to an instrument resulting from customization or modification" is not covered under the warranty.

What this means is that technically changing strings to any other guage than what came stock on the guitar could be considered a customization or modification. Now what that means in practical terms is if you change to a heavier gauge of strings without properly setting up the guitar and the neck warps, repair/replacement of a warped neck might not be covered under warranty. But if you put heavier gauge strings on the guitar and a pickup suddenly fails, those two items are unrelated so a pickup replacement should be covered under the warranty. Warranty claims have been denied for less.

The only reference to howardo's question seems to be this:
Guitar and controller warranty

"Normal" guitars used in "normal" conditions (including that it is quite "normal" to experiment with different string gauges...) do not fall out of warranty coverage.

Fender strings come in various gauges - are all the thicker ones for non-Fender/Squier guitars only..?

But to ponder on warranties a little further:
I'm not familiar with consumer legislation inside the US (as far as I know, legislations may differ from state to state). Here in the EU, the consumer is protected even without any warranty/guarantee from the manufacturer/seller - so the warranty/guarantee is considered as an additional and voluntary benefit from the manufacturer/seller to the consumer - and it can not diminish the rights given in the legislation.
BTW, take a look at what Fender warranty covers: "defects in materials and workmanship"...

So heres the reply i got from fender uk

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Changing your strings will not invalidate the warranty. All you need to remember is that changing from the current gauge of string will mean the guitar will need to be set up.

Kind regards,

Matt Davey | Service Manager
Fender Musical Instruments GBI

Go for put whatever guage strings you want on your guitar
