I've seen a black/maple board VM70's and was thinking of doing the mods to turn it into either a Dave Gilmour or Steve Rothery model. I'm leaning towards the Rothery one as he often uses an old black SQ. Oddly the new VM line is prefaced with SQ so I'm presuming this is a modern replica in some way. I'm thinking of travelling a fair distance to try one out, but not for a couple of weeks.

Anyway, anybody have any views on the quality of these new Vintage Modified 70's models ? Do you think it's a good quality guitar for the project ?

well you know me MD and i reckon the VM models would be an excellent starting point for a project and we all know the latest string of squiers are pretty good from the box, go for it mate

Bought it the day after I posted the thread, made the trip to try it out and was surprised. After a little setup I have a good usable floating trem too. With a bit of graphite the nut we're sorted. Much nicer than the Deluxe model I owned for just under a year and way nicer than any of the MIM's I'd been trying over the months. I managed to find a couple of minor finish flaws and shaved £30 off the price too :D

My £700 Ibanez is a lovely guitar, but this VM Squier feels nicer in the hands and has way more natural sustain.

yep squier are producing some really great quality guitars now, i think they are surprising a lot of people.
Now the question is.... Gilomour, or Rothery? :D

The big headstock says Rothery's Squier SQ to me. The EMG SA pickups will probably cost more than the guitar :lol: I'll keep it stock for a while I think.

Hey,

I had created a kind of Steve Rothery partscaster over the years, which at last count had:
a black Mighty Mite body;
an original 70's Fender neck, which I rescued from a terrible state, but lost the logo and stuff;
a Floyd Rose licensed trem;
a black EMG SA set I've had for years on a black plate.

Then, Squier released that black on black with maple VM and I was really excited. I tried a couple but the ones I tried didn't feel right somehow and I was so disappointed. I did end up buying one of the other 70s VM models, the Ritchie Blackmore style vintage white with black pickups, though, so I know they're good guitars.

So I started trying to find an original SQ model and eventually one came up on fleabay at a vintage store in the states. It was typically modestly priced, even though these 80's Japanese Squiers are very well thought of, but the international shipping and import duty did bump it up a fair bit!
I also ditched the Floyd and got a Kahler.

The old partscaster was gutted of the EMGs and they were transplanted into my new, old Squier. After finding the right guitar, I had to be brave to route it for the Kahler, but I bit the bullet and it went well. Now I've got the full package with the right look, feel and tone. Still lacking the technique, sadly.

Are you still going down the Steve Rothery SQ road? I hope so! Get the Kahler if you like, but beg, borrow and steal for the EMG SA pickups, and you won't be disappointed.

All the best,

Matt
