I can't identify the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster pickups.

The following review compares it to P-90 with JM covers :

http://www.tymguitars.com.au/?p=6029

While this next one seems to say that it's regular JM pickups :

http://www.harmonycentral.com/docs/DOC-2241

does anyone have the right specs of it ?
are they Fender Jazzmaster pickups as in the American standard model ?
or Squier ? Duncan design ?...

I'm actually looking for an affordable JM, with a sound close to the original (no P-90, no humbucker or weird custom specs).
I've been looking at the fender classic player and also the squier vintage modified ...
Does anyone have played this guitars ?

Thanks.

I own this guitar. I have owned it for 10 months but have not played it as much as it deserves due to other commitments.
I researched this guitar heavily when I first heard about it. The Harmony Central review you posted a link to was the best source of info I found on it. It does say in the article:

"When you select either one of the pickups, there is some hum and noise, as you would expect from a Jazzmaster with single coil pickups. The pickup and control cavities are painted with conductive paint for shielding to help minimize this. Fortunately, the pickups are RWRP (reverse wound / reverse polarity), so when used together, they are hum canceling. These are not weak pickups. DC resistance measured at 8.20 kilohm for the neck pickup and 8.34 kilohm for the bridge pickup. The pickup coils are wider and flatter than a Strat pickup, as you'd also expect. Unlike vintage models and American reissues which have non-adjustable, individual magnet "slugs" for the polepieces, the Squier uses two bar magnets beneath the coil to magnetize the six adjustable polepieces. The coils are also a bit taller than vintage style. (Figure 4A and 4B) This combination of features is somewhat similar to a P-90, and the sound of the Squier is somewhat brighter than the vintage Jazzmasters I've played. It's a very nice sounding guitar, and it has some cool punchiness to the tone, and there's richness to the sound in the rhythm mode, but overall, it's not quite as warm or as deep as I was expecting."

Judging from that I would say that they are designed by Squier and are close to P90's. I think the pickups sound good. This is the only Jazzmaster I have ever owned so I cannot compare it to another. The lead circuit is nice and bright and the rhythm circuit is a bit darker, good for crunch etc. I love the neck on this guitar. Probably one of the best things about it. The trem is set closer to the bridge than other Jazzmasters though. I think this was a request from J Mascis. It also does not have a trem lock, so if you break a string, apparantly the guitar has an easier chance to go out of tune. I haven't broken a string yet. The feel of this guitar is great. Very good quality for the price. Part of me got too excited and I should have waited for the Squier VM line to come out, but I, in no way regret this purchase at all.

To add to this, I recently had to take this guitar in because the neck pick up is dead. I had a couple of electronics issues when i first bought it. Had a bad volume pot swapped out. I won't see this guitar for about 2 weeks now.

Sorry for interrupting with another question, but I am new to this.
What is the main difference between a P90 and a Jazzmaster pickup?
Sound differences and size differences, mainly.

Can I fit a Jazzmaster pickup in a humbucker cavity?

UMS, you'll easily find the dimensions in google, try;
"Gibson P90" or "Jazzmaster" or "standard humbucker" + "pickup" + "dimensions".

Soundwise the P90 & (Fender) Jazzmaster (IMHO; someone else may differ) belong to the same family: fatter than Fender single coils (Tele & Strat), full midrange etc; but not as full or sustained as typical humbuckers.

And the Fender Jazzmaster pickup is a B.i.g Lady; expect routing if you have a typical humbucker cavity. If i recall right (template is not at hand at the moment), the Jazzmaster route is 4"x2.25" (~102x57,2 mm).

Thanks, jmattis. Your answer has been a huge help.

You see, recently after I heard the sound the Blacktop Jazzmaster makes, I fell in love with the humbucker-JM pickup combination, so I thought why don't I do that to my Tele.

After thinking for some days, I decided not to go with it. A Tele is a Tele, after all, and its sweet neck pickup is already enough for me.
