According to fender.com pages, all Jazzmasters have an alder body, except the JMascis version (basswood) - which by the way is also a very nice & very affordable (under 400 € or $...) instrument.

thanks, J. I'd love to have the J Mascis Fender, but I'm not really digging the squier's color scheme... and I've already put 200 on the VM (white) I'm getting. It was the only one they had, and unopened when I asked about it. I got to play it for a bit and then they tagged it and put it back in the back room for me. UNTOUCHED! haha. hopefully I'll be able to get it in the next week or so, just gotta come up with another 75 dollars.

You mean the one with the tremolo, right?

It's basswood.

The Squier J Mascis feels real good. I have a dead pickup issue, so the electronics are acting up on me. Its in for warranty work now. Hopefully after that tthings will be good because i really like this guitar. Part of me thinks I should have waited for the new Squier versions that are out now, but I really love this guitar.

Yes, the VM Jazzmasters are basswood. I got mine (SB) a couple weeks ago and really like this guitar. My other guitars must feel neglected now. I can't put this thing down! :D

I put half wound 11's on it right after getting it and have none of the bridge, etc. issues I have read on various forums. One nice thing is that the trem on these always goes back to in tune. Sure beats the strat trem. I even like the pickups in this. I had planned on replacing them, before I got it, but I like the sound of these.

These seem like they are much nicer than the price would indicate.

Got one of these myself this week in white (wanted CAR, but none in stock :(). Love it, sort of. I'm very much a Strat/Tele/LP man, but wanted a Jazzer, partly for the sound, partly for the looks and partly because I'm a hoarder and just hadn't got one - I feel a Jag coming on soon... in CAR!
Anyhoo, in the middle of setting it up with 11s. I also shimmed the neck. Great sounding on the 9s, if a little harsh/trebly on the bridge pu. Will be changing the pots in the near future as the volume control, sorry 'switch', really lets the guitar down. Also feel this will improve the tone of the guitar - I believe they are 1 meg pots? 500k volume and 250k tone should sort that out.
That aside. WOW, what a great guitar. Not going to make it to the stage, but will be used for recording.
