You got we wrong. I'm not saying there are small individual differences, just they are not as noticeable as stepping up a notch in quality. One shouldn't ask, or expect, a dealer to be happy to unpack and drag out a half dozen Squiers from the back room because you think your Jeff Beck.

Please don't take this wrong, I mean no offense to anyone (I love/own Squiers). But, why are you buying a Squier if you feel you need to try out several of the same guitar to find the one that meets your standards. I doubt GC would open up several new Squiers for you even if they had them in stock. You wouldn't even have that option if you were buying an expensive guitar most likely. Dealers just don't stock the back room with several identicals. If you feel your that proficient maybe it's time to upgrade.

I would never buy a guitar without trying it out first and yes i would expect a salesperson to go out the back and get a few guitars for me to try, thats why they are there, and this would be done regardles of the amount of cash i am spending, i would also expect the shop to do a setup for me for free or discounted depending how much i am spending. It doesnt matter if you are a beginner or a full blown rock god the axe has to feel comfortable or its not going to be fun to play, infact even more so for a beginner.

Some Dealers may only have one of a particular model. But I've had dealers take me to the storeroom and turn me loose. If I walk into to a shop and I'm looking for a specific model the first thing I ask is how many do you have in stock, for 2 reasons, If I like what's on the wall I better put some money on it if it's the only one, ask to see others or go somewhere else if it's not.

Yes, if there is an defect somewhere that unlikely got past QC... pass. But I still maintain that that you can line up ten identical guitars and a good luthier can set them up to make them all sound and play just like the one you initially think is best. Modern manufacturing techniques don't allow for much variance anymore. They're pretty much like Pepsi cans.

I'm a Coke man...
But as far as guitars are concerned, all the modern techniques with CNC's and automatic finishing lines etc. still leave plenty of room for individual differences - possibly part of it due to just the right (or wrong) combination of woods in a guitar, possibly just the mojo factor. Playing several "identical" guitars tells me exactly which one is for me, which just ain't.

But to the original subject: I vote for maple option for every Squier & Fender.

I was just in my local GC asking such questions about the Vintage Modified Jazzmaster... you have to pay in full to get them to order it (which is bogus, I didn't get mine at GC) but when it gets there they told me you have 30 days to change your mind. So , for the price of the Affinity, if you're going to MAYBE put up the money anyway, wouldn't it be nice to get hands on time with it and then if you don't want it maybe pick something else off the wall?
GC failed me once again, though. they're always such jerks. like they're all rockstars and don't have time to talk to you if you're not travelling by tour bus. that's the impression i get. anyway, they said it'd be a month at least before they could even get the JM in store, plus you have to pay full price up front, and then wait. so, went to Sam Ash - they got me a brand new one still in the box from the back room,i put 100 $ down to hold it, and i will be picking it up later this week when i get paid. hooray for sam ash!

I used to think the same thing because of several bad experiences with GC. I went (reluctantly because the local family owned shop is closed on Sunday) to the new location by me and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of service. Still prefer the small local shop but it's nice to know I have a backup if I can't get what I need from there.

Hopefully Sam Ash works out for you.

You are absolutely correct about giving it a good setup. I just recently go into the technical side of guitars (setups, design, etc.) and did a full setup on my bass. The difference was night and day. It went from being barely playable to being a joy to play. Better action, better intonation, and great ease of play.

Sure they should, it's their job. With the regular QC issues on budget guitars the salesperson should understand the reasons why. I happily ride sales folk like Sea Biscuit, I'm the customer and I'm handing over hundreds of pounds a year to these places. I like a nice chat, some favourite guitarist talk, but ultimately I will make them work for a sale. Not because I'm a self important c.o.c.k, but because I know all guitars are not created equal.

Back to the original topic, IMHO nearly all teles and strats just look better (or more correct?) with maple fretboards. I also like the feel of them better on those models. I also wish that was an option on all Squier strat and tele models. JMHO. :)
