I think the problem is when you go in the average store. The only maple necks are affinities and maybe a Classic vibe 50's if they even have a classic vibe. Even the GC closest to me had very few maple neck Squire strats

No store carries every model of every guitar. GC will order for you what they don't have. Not a big deal.

Ya they will order it "IF" your going to buy it. Just cuz it looks good in the catalog does not guarantee I'll like it. I prefer to play one first. Heck I really want to play 2 or 3 of the same model.

I was just in my local GC asking such questions about the Vintage Modified Jazzmaster... you have to pay in full to get them to order it (which is bogus, I didn't get mine at GC) but when it gets there they told me you have 30 days to change your mind. So , for the price of the Affinity, if you're going to MAYBE put up the money anyway, wouldn't it be nice to get hands on time with it and then if you don't want it maybe pick something else off the wall?
GC failed me once again, though. they're always such jerks. like they're all rockstars and don't have time to talk to you if you're not travelling by tour bus. that's the impression i get. anyway, they said it'd be a month at least before they could even get the JM in store, plus you have to pay full price up front, and then wait. so, went to Sam Ash - they got me a brand new one still in the box from the back room,i put 100 $ down to hold it, and i will be picking it up later this week when i get paid. hooray for sam ash!

I was "discouraged" from getting a Squier Strat Affinity because "it's cheap, you won't be happy with it" when I asked at a GC store once.

I bought it from a small local shop about an hour away from me. The owner is a great guy and he went through about 5 or 6 Affinity's he had in stock, that he had set up for sale, and he showed me the one he thought had the best possibility of the bunch. I guess I'd say never rule out a brand by name alone but I probably wouldn't buy it without playing it first either.

I originally bought it for my son but have inherited it again due to his lack of playing interest. BUT he did paint a nice pickguard on it for me. The Maple FB is very smooth, love it, and the guitar stays in tune for me well as long as I don't do insane tremolo dives. I'm actually thinking of blocking that anyway, never use it.

Lucky You. He might not be a guitar player but it looks like he's got talent with paint.

Thanks, he's been getting pretty proficient with it. Now I have a bass pickguard or two I'd like him to address :D

He is gonna do one now for the guitarist in our band's Strat. After that? If you are really interested I'm sure he could do one for you. A little $$ plus some pics of his work are all great for his portfolio.

I've been playing this alot, I'll admit the look got me interested in it again. Actually gonna sell my Band of Gypsies Strat and keep this one. I'm more a bass player anyway and could use the $$ for new toys.

Please don't take this wrong, I mean no offense to anyone (I love/own Squiers). But, why are you buying a Squier if you feel you need to try out several of the same guitar to find the one that meets your standards. I doubt GC would open up several new Squiers for you even if they had them in stock. You wouldn't even have that option if you were buying an expensive guitar most likely. Dealers just don't stock the back room with several identicals. If you feel your that proficient maybe it's time to upgrade.

Totally disagree with you, tvr1979. In cheaper guitars individual differences are sometimes quite significant. And on the expensive ones: I'll be damned if I pay ahelluvalot dollars for a guitar without playing it first to see if it fits me.
If a shop is not interested in what a customer needs&wants, move on to another.

BTW, I once, many moons ago, had a chance to talk to Duke Robillard after his gig, and asked him why he plays Squiers. He said he has the chance to pick just the one he likes...
