Hello!

I have just purchased a black "Squier Tele Custom II P90". A fantastic guitar all in all.
But there is one thing that puzzles me. The weight! This guitar is really, really heavy.
My brother has a the very same model but in the color of Blond, but his guitar is light as a feather. Clearly the woodtypes are different.

However when reading the specs of "Squier Tele Custom II P90" the body are supposedly agathis on both the black and on the blonde version of the guitars. This can not be the case because my guitar are at least twice the weight of his. The tonal difference are miles away, mine sings alsmost like a Fender while his has the tonal quality that you would expect from a cheaper agathis Squier, not bad at all but not on par with a "real" American Telecaster.

According to the serialnumber my guitar are built in the "Cort" factory 2006 hand his in the "Samick" factory the very same year.

Can anyone shed some light to this mystery?
What are the factual differences between the woodtypes used in these great guitars?

Regards!
N.N

There can be many varibles to the weight of wood. The tightness of the grain, the drying process used, the geographic region it was grown, some woods grow faster in some climates so even the same type can be much different. Ash for instance can be rather light or heavy as lead. The 2 different companies suggests different suppliers of raw materials.

Thank you for your great reply!

That explains a lot. In that case I would recommend anyone thinking about buying this model to actually try out a few before deciding since these two guitars feels like two completely different models even though the specifications looks the very same.

Having said that both guitars are extremely good value for money, they sound sweet, look great and mine plays like butter. Having said that my black heavy-wood version feels miles more solid and convincing in comparison to the lightweight-wood blonde version my brother bought.
