I have just bought my first guitar and I was wondering about set up. I looked around and a couple of the places mentioned free set up with my guitar. The place I actually bought from never mentioned it. My question is does a new guitar need to be set up or is that something that I would have to worry about after playing a while?

A lot of times it depends on the guitar and the store. Some stores will setup guitars before they put them out for sale, some may just take them out of the box and put them out for sale. If you have any friends who have a bit more playing experience, you may want to see what they think about your guitars setup. Sometimes new guitars will need some minor adjustments made for intonation, truss rod, action, and pickup height. Eventually you may be able to do this for yourself, but since you are starting out, I would have someone else do it, but ask them if they'll let you watch them set it up so you can learn a bit how to do it for your next guitar purchase...

Just a thought, you might want to play it for a while then go to a guitar shop and try some others out see what you like about their setup. Once you know what you like then try and get yours that way too. With the help of a pro or your friends as posted by Bowlfreshener. Unless the guitar is out of it's intonation (which I doubt Fender would send one out like that) you should be o.k. to start out. If you are not sure press each string at the 12th fred then lightly touch the string (without pressing down) over the the actual 11th fret to sound the corresponding harmonic to the note you pressed down on. They should both sound the same pitch. Practice this with a tuner every day. Pretty soon you will learn how to do touch harmonics 12 frets away from notes you play like EVH or your favorite musician. It is a very important technique and really cool if you mess with the whammy and effects.

Have fun with your journey and learn from as many different people as you can until you decide what you like.

I liken set-up to getting into a new car. You adjust the seat, mirrors, tilt wheel etc. When you are done, it is comfortable for YOU!! The next guy can set it up the way they like.

Set your guitar up for you! Make it playable for how you like to play. You will enjoy it much more. String gauge and height are the most important things to me. Intonation is a given, but do that only after the height has been set and the string gauge settled on. Another mod would be pickups. You can vary your sound widely with a new pickup designed for your style of playing. Make it "yours" and you will love it!

Sometimes guitars from factory need setting up. One of the things i look at first is the strings lined up with neck...both the e strings should have equal spacing from the outside edge of finger board from top to bottom. During shipping sometimes the neck(bolt on ) will move from side to other side. It does happen. String will slip off neck when close to edge..bad. I could right a book on how to set up a guitar...but ,go to a shop that sets-up guitars and try one that has been set up by person doing your axe. Reason for this is simple..not everybody plays the same way. I had one setup and payed 60.00 bucks and it sucked. This guy named Kenny Marshall set up a guitar for me 20yrs. ago and its still great! By the way he's at virginna beach now. Best thing to do..is learn how to set it up yourself...nobody knows better than you how you like it set. If not call Kenny@virginna BEACH...SO SHOP MAYBE A@M? HAS A WEB SITE. hOPE this helps some of you out....JAM-ON

Amen to that! I was fortunate enough to work at a guitar shop for a few years, and the owner graciously let me in on his knowledge form years of experience! That low paying job was worth way more than the salary I made there.
