I'm a complete beginner looking for my first guitar and was thinking strongly of buying the Squier Affinity Strat Special package ($249).

I now see a Squier Affinity Stratocaster available for approx $180 (guitar only, not a package). What is the difference between the two guitars? Would one be preferable for a beginner?

The 2nd Affinity can be found here: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0310603503

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

There's no difference at all; they're the same guitar. Just that the package comes with the stuff that a beginner would most likely need (amp, strap, cable, picks, etc.)

Thank you. I may just buy the guitar separate as the colors in the package are very limited, and that way maybe buy a slightly better amp (reviews seem to indicate the amp isn't great).

Thanks for the reply!

I'd recommend going with the Mustang I amp. Only $100 and you get lots of great tones and flexibility, especially when combined with the included Fender FUSE software.

I'd say get the mustang 1. also have you looked into the bullet strats? they get a nice sound and are just as cheap.

I've now seen many comments about the Mustang and it definitely seems the way to go. I may skip the bullet though and stick with the Affinity or Standard. It seems the extra money is worth it. Is it worth considering a used higher end guitar, or will the better guitar lose its advantage by being used?

The Squier Affinity's and Standards aren't really that much better than the Bullets, if at all. In fact, some consider the Bullets to be better made than those. If you're gonna consider a second-hand guitar, go with a Classic Vibe 50's or 60's Strat, or a Vintage Modified Strat.

The only things you need to worry about in regards to a used guitar is the condition it's in. Make sure there's no damage to the electronics or anything. You might see some scrapes on the finish and whatnot, and that's normal and won't really affect the tone or anything, though whether or not you'd mind the aesthetics like that is up to you...

I think getting a guitar and amp seperate is better if you can pick between guitars of the same model. Deluxe and Vintage modified squiers are fairly inexpensive. Standards can be nice. If you get a combo package Avoid SE packages as there is no resale value. Check the fret edges if they stick out try another guitar. I do this first then I play it, you be surprised even some of the higher end guitars have rough frets. If you can afford it go for mustang II or III or a G-dec 30 If you have a computer the mustangs are great for using Jamtracks but if you don't look at the G-dec. A computer is still nice to download more tracks and settings and to use Fender Fuse but the G-dec can use a Flash card. you can use a mp-3 player on both of them too.

They do have one with the G-dec Jr and a Affinity HSS Strat. I have a G-dec jr, it's not a bad little amp but with the new Mustangs and G-dec's I would probably not get a JR. I really like the adjustability you can do when using Fender Fuse. If I were to get a new setup right now I'd go for a 70's Vintage Modified Strat (black w/ Maple neck) "$229.99" and a Mustang II "$199.99" for around $430 total If you need cheaper look a the Mustang I for "$109" total $340. the G_dec/Affinty pak is $349.99

Just got back from the store. I went with the black 70's Vintage Modified Strat and the Mustang I. The guitar is on back order for a week, but I've waited years for this so no big deal.

Thanks everyone for your input. It's much appreciated!

Make sure you like the Affinity neck before you buy. It's narrow and puts the strings closer together. Not good if you have larger hands.
