Essentially I am starting a project to take off the dull purple/blue gloss paint, and if all is well use the under wood to create something like this. So far I'm looking at these steps, and will be adding my progress to this post.

Stripping the paint.
Sanding.
Staining the wood.
And a gloss finish.

Purchase List (Picked this all up at Rona, you can probably find better prices elsewhere.)
Gator Sandpaper 100 Grit $3.30
Gator Sandpaper 150 Grit $3.30
Gator Sandpaper 220 Grit $3.30
Synthetic Paint Brush $4.62
Plastic Scrapper $1.25
Minwax Paint/Varnish Remover $14.39

If there is any helpful steps you guys can throw in, that'd be awesome.

Progress thus far.

Disassembled the guitar.

Started using a paint remover called Soft Stripper.

(This product was taking too long for any progress. Will purchase stronger remover tomorrow.)

Picked up a new remover after work (Minwax Paint/Varnish Remover) this remover worked a lot better.

Sanded as much as I could before dark.

It is supposed to rain for a few days, won't get much done without an indoor workshop.

Usually I don't like finishes like that, but that looks beautiful. Hope you enjoy the final result. :)

make sure you use a wood conditioner before you apply the stain for a even color penetration. you may even sart with a darker stain apply then wiped off to darken the grain start in a small area covered by the pickguard first so it's covered if it dosent look right. Most painted bodies don't have a good grain that's why they are painted and not natural. You pay extra for those select pieces of wood.

IdahoRed thanks for the reply! I haven't heard of a wood conditioner but I will look into it, lucky enough for me the wood looks fine. I just haven't had much time in the last couple of days. But I plan on getting past that polyurethane finish tomorrow!

The one I used is from Minwax. It come in oil or acrylic based to match the type of stain you plan on using. One thing to be aware of is that many types of wood the grain will raise after the first coat of anything so you may need to resand "lightly" and reapply before moving on to the next step. I think you may want some 400 grit paper and some XXXX steel wool in your parts list too. There are a few video's out there on refinishing that may help too. what type of finish are you planning on using and how do you intend to apply it?
