Hi, I'm looking to buy a guitar for my son. One for sale locally, but only says it is a Squier. Wondering if it is a Standard, Affinity, Vibe etc. I tried emailing the seller but she said it didn't say anything on it to identify it. Can anyone tell from the pic? Sorry, not a very good one...

Thanks

As you said, the pic is not that great, but it appears to be at least a few years old because most of the current Squier lineup has the 70's style headstock, and it is not any of the ones with a smaller headstock, unless it is a Bullet. Going back a few years there just weren't as many different Squiers as today. You can probably get a new Bullet for $100 +tax, and the store should set it up as nice as possible and warranty it. Or you can get a new Affinity, which is a descent step up from the Bullet for under $200 out the door.

IMO, used guitars in that price range just aren't worth it, pay the few bucks more and get something the merchant will assist you with and warranty.

Looks like a bullet to me. Without SN or better pics, hard to say. I recommend to buy new, buy at least a Squier Standard model or higher quility.

Thanks for the replies. My son's instructor recommended a Squier Stratocaster Vibe 50's, I was hoping this might be one and save some bucks. They aren't the cheapest thing out there! I'll check out the local stores to see what kind of deal we can make.

The Squier Classic Vibe line of guitars is very nice. Very high quality overall. Pretty much a steal. It'll be a great first guitar, a guitar your son would be fine using and even gigging with for the rest of his life, honestly.

I agree.

However, if you weren't looking to spend quite that much, I would suggest that you go for a Squier Standard Series. They can be had for $229cdn from Long and McQuade. Epiphone SG G310 or SG G400 are also great guitars for the price ~ $300.

Yes^

Squier has stepped their game up in recent times. Just about any Squier line is pretty good. Just make sure you have the axe set up correctly and it'll play great.

to be honest you cant go wrong with the classic vibe 50's or the 60's for that matter, if you are going to buy one second hand you need to be able to see it first get a good look at it and make sure you do your homework on them so you know what they look like and what parts look like to compare, but honestly i would spend the extra cash and get a brand new one, and get a deal on getting it setup proprerly and get the essential extras too, like a strap, spare strings, i am not sure but i think the higher end squiers also come with a gig bag (i may be wrong), if not he will need one. I know i am bumping the price up but if you bundle them all together a good music shop will do you a deal, or maybe throw in the setup F.O.C. (they arent cheap). Go on spoil him theres nothing like opening the box and picking up a new guitar

Thanks again for all of the advice. As much as I enjoy finding a good used deal, I agree with you that a new one is the way to go. I can barely tell the difference between a guitar and a banjo, so I'll be better off getting a new one than trying to determine if a used one is any good.

When you say "setup", what does that entail? I just assumed you bought it, they tuned it for you, and off you went...

A setup could be considered the fine tuning of the guitar.

Guitars are crafted in factories and then shipped. Initially they start setup and then over time as they are jostled, go through temp. and humidity changes, etc. They are not as playable as they were in the factory conditions. A guitar tech can adjust the bow in the neck, the ability of the guitar to stay in tune with itself up and down the neck, the feel of the frets, and the overall ease of playability and get it sounding it's best.

Some folks like to setup their own guitars and other take them to more knowledgable and experienced techs. It is all about maintaining your instrument and needs to be performed on a regular basis depending on your expectations of your guitar.

If you want to know more check out the Stratocaster setup guide here...

And if it is for your son...take him and make sure he gets something he wants or he'll never play it.

+1 on that, i would recommend your also learning how to setup his own guitar, could save you a small fortune in the long run, a professional setup here in the UK can cost upwards of £60, so i learnt quick :D

Yeah, definitely make sure he learns how to set it up himself at some point. A lot of new guitar players are afraid of doing a setup themselves, but there's nothing really difficult about it. Setting up the trem/bridge is easy, adjusting pickup height and string height is easy, setting the intonation is easy, swapping out strings is easy, and usually you won't even have to deal with the truss rod, which is the only thing that could potentially get tricky...

Wow, you people are great! Now, my son is only 10, so some of this may still be difficult for him, but he has all the time in the world to learn it. I'll take him shopping around his birthday, which is coming up soon.

Thanks again!
