I recently purchased a Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster SH in metallic red and I love it. Replaced the string trees with American Standard ones and the neck plate with a 70's style "F" plate. I want to replace the pick guard with a custom one from Greasy Groove but I have an issue. I struggle to see where I must send them my original pick guard purely because it's a "Squier" so they can charge me an extra $20 to ensure the hole spacing and alignment. This is 2012 and I would believe that there must be some standards across the board in the manufacturing process and assembly of the insturment. If I went to Guitar Center to get a replacement pick guard I would be able to get one and either have them put it on or do it myself. Can the holes really be that far off or unaligned? Someone can maybe flesh this out for me and many others? I also don't understand why not sell a pick guard without any holes and the end user must align the old and the new and drill the holes themselves? Thanks.

Don't expect any non-OEM pickguard holes to line up with the holes in your original pickguard. That's a fact of life. Even an OEM replacement pickguard may be off some. It's a little thing called tolerances. The only way to guarantee fit is to use your original pickguard as a template which is why so many custom pickguard makers have you send the original in to them. Why not sell a blank pickguard for the buyer to drill? A little thing called "profit".

do a paper copy of your pickguard, lay it on some paper and draw around it, and mark the screw holes and post that, they should be able to work from that

I just replaced a pickguard on a Squier Standard Strat with an OEM aluminum engine turned. 1 hole was off. Not so bad and easily dealt with.

i've looked at greasygroove myself, that's a total ripoff paying 20 dollars more, especially if you're working on a squier or something else you don't need to remain totally mint and perfect. i'd say at least the important holes will line up , like the ones on the side of the neck and bridge.... just use the ones you can, and then drill some small pilot holes into the body where the off holes on the pickguard are.
or that's what i'd do, at least. hope that helps.
