the only real difference is the pickups, alnico 3 in the 50's and alnico 5 in the 60's, as this will be your first guitar this probably wont make much difference to you, so my suggestion would be to choose a colour you like from either of the 2, and buy that, they are both awesome guitars which will see you through the learning steps and into your first band without a doubt

The SRV signature model has fender texas special pickups which are alnico 5 so i guess the 60's would be better

Pretty ambitious searching for SRV/Hendrix tone for your first guitar. Aim high.

You can't go wrong either way. 60s might be closer to their sound, but if you prefer a maple fingerboard the 50s will get you a big chunk of that tone as well.

Practice and get good.

Some guys swear that the rosewood fingerboard has a bit of a " darker " tone; Im not sure that I can tell that big of a difference but I prefer the feel of maple.

going on looks alone the maple board swings it for me, cant comment on the sound but the maple certainly ages very nicely on the 50's model.

I'll bet that more than 90% of guitarists couldn't tell the difference in a blind test with two otherwise identical guitars. That would take special ears...and ears that haven't been damaged by playing in front of loud amps. There are probably some who could tell a difference, but more will claim to hear it than actually can.

The difference between the CV50 and 60 that anyone would notice would be with the pickups.

I think so much of this perception is psychological. The rosewood vs. maple, or the nitro vs. poly effect on sound. I'd like to see a scientific study, but the problem is that no two pieces of wood are exactly alike, so it would be tough to get conclusive data.

The other thing is that almost nobody in the audience would be able to tell the sonic differences between a song played on a Tele, Strat, or Les Paul...or whether a tube or S/S amp is being used. Guitarists go crazy about the perfect tone - and the right tone can be so sweet - but much of that is lost on the average listener.

Still...aim high for that perfect tone.
