Just picked up a Tele Standard in Antique burst with tortoise pg. Rewired and reversed the control plate. Also swapped out the neck pu for a GFS '63Vintage Pro series pu. Has some nice bite now. Gonna do the bridge pu with matching GFS Pro in a couple of weeks. Overall, very nice finish and plays very smooth.

I like it, sounds like you had a plan all along. I recently got a standard Strat and love it with the switch in the 2 and 4 position, but in 1,3 and 5 sounds a little ruff, if you know what I mean. What do you suggest?

I would make sure the pu's are at the right height. This info might help.

I'm a big fan of Guitar Fetish. I put one of their loaded pick guards on a cheap J Turser Strat and turned it into a very decent sounding git. I've also used some of their other pu's(humbucker sized P90's in an SG and Vintage '59 HB's in a LP Studio) and have never had a problem with tone. They make some nice replacement hardware too.
This is the pick guard I put on the JT.

Also just put a 4 way switch on the Tele so I can run the pu's in parallel or in series. Sounds great!
Good luck!
